GM Kevin Towers said that Gregorius and Chris Owings will compete for the starting shortstop job during spring training, the Diamondbacks' official website reports.
Gregorius is the superior defensive shortstop but Owings might offer a bit more at the plate. That's still up for debate, after Gregorius posted a solid (for a shortstop) .252/.332/.373 slash line over 404 plate appearances as a rookie. This is a pretty good spot for the Diamondbacks to be in, as the team is already settled at the other three infield spots, while both Owings and Gregorius possess intriguing potential.
