Furcal (elbow) signed a one-year contract with the Marlins on Thursday, and the expectation is that he will start at second base, FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports.
Furcal missed the entire 2013 campaign, after undergoing Tommy John surgery in March. With the recovery time for position players significantly less than that for pitchers, Furcal should be ready for spring training. The move from shortstop to second base should also help, and the Marlins reportedly want Furcal to be an everyday player. At the age of 36, he doesn't seem to have much left from an offensive perspective, as evidenced by his .264/.325/.346 slash line from 2012. Furcal's presence puts the future of Donovan Solano into question.
