According to GM Doug Melvin, fellow second baseman Scooter Gennett currently has the lead over Weeks (hamstring) for the starting second base job in 2014, MLB.com's Adam McCalvy reports.
Weeks has been the Brewers' starting second baseman since 2005, but with him posting a career-worst .663 OPS over 104 games before seeing his season come to an end in mid-August, and Gennett finishing the year with a .834 OPS, change may be coming in Milwaukee. Though Gennett is the favorite at this point, he hit just .154 against left-handers in his first big-league season, so Weeks and his career .829 OPS against southpaws may be a better option in that situation. The Brewers will wait until spring training before deciding who will enter 2014 as the starter, but it wouldn't be shocking to see the duo open next season sharing time at the position.
