Middlebrooks began his offseason workout program less than a week after the World Series parade, the Providence Journal reports. He had a disappointing 2013 season, slashing .227/.271/.425 and losing his starting job twice.
Boston got sub-par production from third base, but feels Middlebrooks, who came back from breaking his wrist in 2012, can be the answer. A player's swing can be impacted by wrist injuries well after their return to the playing field. Despite the poor averages, Middlebrooks did hit 27 homers between Boston and Pawtucket. "We think, if we do nothing, we'll get more out of third base than we did this year," Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington said. "That's our hope and expectation given the players that are here."
