Rosenthal will enter spring training in 2014 as the closer for the Cardinals according to manager Mike Matheny, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
Rosenthal took over as the closer for the Cardinals in September and excelled in the role in the postseason, recording four saves and striking out 18 over 11.2 scoreless innings. He had expressed interest in converting to a starter, but the Cardinals emphasized his future as a closer heading into next season at least. Edward Mujica recorded 37 saves in the closer role, but the Cardinals can go with the young Rosenthal instead, who has a more traditional big-time fastball and changeup combo for a closer.
