Bethancourt was optioned to Triple-A Gwinnett on Thursday, MLB.com reports.
Evan Gattis is nursing a quad strain, but the Braves clearly don't think Bethancourt is ready for a significant role in the majors. While athletically gifted, the 22-year-old Bethancourt has serious question marks with regard to his on-base skills and plate discipline after drawing just 16 walks in 388 plate appearances last season with Double-A Mississippi. He'll have to bide his time for now, but Bethancourt would likely be the first catcher up in the event of an injury.
