Fantasy baseball bio: Aaron Hicks

It's often suggested that fantasy baseball owners pay little attention to spring training stats when crafting their draft strategy. I agree - 98 percent of the time. In the case of MLB prospects working towards a promotion and multiple veteran players competing for the starting gig, I believe their spring training production means a little bit more.

This is where Minnesota Twins' center fielder Aaron Hicks enters the picture. The 2008 first-round pick hit .286 (.384 OBP) with 100 runs, 13 home runs, 61 RBI, and 32 stolen bases for Double-A New Britain last season. The Twins added Hicks to its 40-man roster back in late-November. In the two weeks that followed, Minnesota dealt center fielders Denard Span, to the Nationals, and Ben Revere, to the Phillies. This opened the door for Hicks to compete for the starting major league gig without Triple-A service.
He's currently in a three-way battle with Darin Mastroianni and Joe Benson for the job. On March 7, Hicks wow'd every big league beat writer by smacking three home runs against the Phillies in a split-squad game. Now before you poo-poo the accomplishment, realize his first bomb was a leadoff home run against Cliff Lee. He finished the game 4-5 with four runs and six RBI. He's hitting .407 this spring.
Because I don't have the opportunity to catch every Twins' spring training affair, I reached out to the team's beat writer for FOX Sports North, Tyler Mason, for his thoughts on Hicks.
