Week 8 surprises: Young plays mistake-free

I didn't expect to see him dancing all day in the pocket with ample time to make big throws in the secondary. Seriously, I expected to see a better push from the Green Bay defense than we saw in Week 4. Instead, Favre repeated his brilliance performance on the grand stage. He completed 17-of-28 pass attempts for 244 yards and four touchdowns. The Packers did not record a sack, and for the fifth time this season, Favre ended a game without a turnover.
Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez posted a strong performance in Sunday's loss to the Dolphins. He may have been a desperation play in deeper leagues, and he certainly delivered in a difficult spot. Sanchez passed for 265 yards and two touchdowns. He also added a rushing touchdown for the second straight week (third on the season). He absorbed two sacks, but didn't commit a turnover in this contest. This was Sanchez's first 200-yard passing game since Week 1.
Steve Slaton lost his fifth fumble of the season and found himself standing on the sideline while backup tailback Ryan Moats ran wild. Fantasy owners watched Moats carve up the Buffalo run defense as so many tailbacks had done before him. Moats finished the game with 126 rushing yards and became the first Houston running back to rush for three touchdowns in a game.
The Giants failed to surmount any semblance of a pass rush against Donovan McNabb, thereby allowing him to work downfield to his speed options. McNabb appeared to be a risky proposition given his recent struggles against New York, but the decided lack of a pass rush allowed him to sit back in the pocket and deliver time and again. He completed 17-of-23 passes for 240 yards with three touchdowns, two sacks and one lost fumble.
DeSean Jackson roamed free in the New York secondary for a 54-yard touchdown reception. It was Jackson's fifth game with a reception of at least 51 yards.
Rookie Jeremy Maclin caught four passes for 47 yards, including his third touchdown of the season. Maclin has caught four or more passes in four of his past five games.
Brent Celek is joining Vernon Davis (three catches for 20 yards and a touchdown) on the list of unbenchable tight ends. Celek caught an early touchdown pass from McNabb that was negated by a penalty. McNabb found him again to finish the drive, and this touchdown counted. Celek finished the game with four receptions for 61 yards. He's caught three or more passes in every game this season.
We've jumped on his disappearing acts on a week-by-week basis, so I'm sure more than a few fantasy owners raised an eyebrow (and cursed the fact that he was on the bench) when Terrell Owens scored his first touchdown of the season on a 29-yard reverse. Owens also caught a season-high five passes for 39 yards. The Bills take their bye week in Week 9. Perhaps we'll see some of Owens in the passing game coming out of the break against Tennessee.
The Cardinals came into Sunday's game against Carolina with the league's best run defense. They left Sunday's crushing loss with more questions about the team's identity. DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart ran all over the Arizona defense, racking up a total of 245 yards on 40 carries. Williams broke through for a 77-yard scoring run and finished the game with 158 yards on 23 carries. This was his second game with at least 150 rushing yards in the past three weeks. Stewart rushed for 77 yards with two touchdowns. He rebounded from a subpar effort against the Bills to average 5.1 yards per carry. He has scored four touchdowns in his past four games.
Ted Ginn, Jr. didn't record a catch in Sunday's win over the Jets, but he made a profound impact and crushed the Jets' spirits with two ridiculous kickoff returns for touchdowns. Ginn registered 100 and 101-yard returns in the road win. His frequent drops in the passing game had relegated him to the return game. Perhaps that was a blessing in disguise? Owners of the Miami defense certainly think so.
Reggie Wayne was supposed to be hampered by a groin injury in Sunday's game against the 49ers. You wouldn't have known that he was injured while watching him carve up the San Francisco secondary. Wayne posted his best game since Week 1, piling up 12 catches for 147 yards and scored in his fifth straight game. He's averaging 7.3 receptions and 98.4 receiving yards per game.
The thumping put on the Cardinals by the Panthers at least gave Tim Hightower owners something to cheer about (provided that they played the second-year back, of course). The large first-half deficit forced Arizona to abandon the running game for the most part, thereby putting the pass-receiving Hightower in the mix. Hightower matched Chris "Beanie" Wells' carry total with eight, but also caught eight passes out of the backfield. He amassed 96 total yards (39 rushing and 57 receiving) and scored for the fourth consecutive game.
LaDainian Tomlinson didn't amass a huge yardage total on Sunday, but fantasy owners had to be encouraged by two occurances in the win over Oakland. First, Tomlinson carried the ball 18 times his third straight game with at least 18 carries. Secondly, he factored into the goal-line touches once again and reached paydirt twice. I'll put blinders on and ignore the fact that Tomlinson has averaged 3.1 yards per carry in the past two weeks.
To say that I was shocked by the production put forth by Vince Young in Sunday's win over Jacksonville would be a gross exaggeration. However, the fact that Young completed 15 of his 18 pass attempts and did not commit a turnover was encouraging. He passed for 125 and a touchdown while adding 30 rushing yards. Do the math. Depending on how much your league values passing yardage, Young probably turned in a better fantasy day than a good number of regular starters.
Neither of these stat lines was particularly impressive, as neither receiver scored a touchdown on Sunday, but I would be remiss if I failed to note that Austin Collie and Larry Fitzgerald both caught six passes for 66 yards against the 49ers and Panthers, respectively. Those just seemed so appropriate given this weekend's celebration of Halloween, so I had to note them.
