Roger Rotter Fantasy Chat(06/24/2009)
10:50 FOX Fantasy:  Welcome to Wednesday's fantasy chat! Roger Rotter will be here shortly to answer your questions about fantasy baseball, football, auto racing and others. Please feel free to send your questions now.
11:01 FOX Fantasy:  Chris from Santa Cruz, California asks: Why in the world is Kevin Smith SO LOW in your rankings? Nobody has him below the 3rd round, and yet you have him as an 11th round guy. What gives
11:02 Roger:  Yes, he's only a No. 3 RB as he's ranked No. 36 in my RB rankings
11:03 Roger:

Smith accumulated many yards when the game was over by the first quarter. While defenses were defending the pass in a blowout, Detroit was handing off to Smith in the second half even though they were down many.

11:04 Roger Rotter:  Those yards won't be as easy with Detroit expecting to have closer contests.
11:05 Roger Rotter:  In addition, Maurice Morris is just as capable as Smith of being Detroit's featured runner.
11:06 Roger Rotter:

In addition to the top 10, I'd rather have backs like Steve Slaton, Chris Johnson, Marion Barber, Reggie Bush, Ryan Grant, Marshawn Lynch, Thomas Jones and Pierre Thomas.

11:07
Is Kevin Smith a top 15 fantasy back?
Yes
 ( 25% )
No
 ( 75% )

11:08 FOX Fantasy:  Barry Hozinsky from Newbury Park, California asks: I'm in a 10 team keeper league. We keep 2 players, different positions. My first choice is Matt Forte. My league gives 6 points for all TD's, including TD passes. Is Tom Brady a good second choice, or should go with Calvin Johnson instead and hope for a top tier QB a pick or two later?
11:10 Roger Rotter:  I'd keep Forte and Calvin Johnson. It's likely that you can still draft one of my top seven quarterbacks that stand above the others.
11:11 Roger Rotter:  Those are Drew Brees, Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, Philip Rivers, Kurt Warner, Aaron Rodgers and Donovan McNabb. In fact, I was able to draft McNabb in the ninth round of a recent experts draft.
11:11 Roger Rotter:  Check out my complete quarterback rankings.
11:12 Roger Rotter:  If for some reason those quarterbacks are taken, look at a sleeper in the mid-rounds like Matt Schaub and a player who can rebound like Matt Hasselbeck.
11:13
11:13 FOX Fantasy:  Jeremy asks: Is Garrard a solid QB2 this year?
11:14 Roger Rotter:  Yes, he's ranked No. 18th in my rankings, and will have a chance to set a career high in passing scores with the arrival of Torry Holt.
11:15 [Comment From Guest ]
NO to Reggie Bush. Pierre Thomas is the primary rb on a possible #1 offense of the entire NFL.
11:16 FOX Fantasy:  document.domain = "coveritlive.com";A reader asks: Do you think Andre Johnson will stay healthy the entire year? Will Frank Gore finally reach double digit tds this year?
11:18 Roger Rotter:

It's no guarantee that Andre Johnson can remain healthy for an entire season after he missed nearly half of the season two years ago.

11:19 Roger Rotter:  That's why I have Larry Fitzgerald, Randy Moss and Reggie Wayne ranked ahead of him. They have been more durable in their career.
11:20 Roger Rotter:  Check out my wide receiver rankings.

11:21 FOX Fantasy:  Bob from Atlanta asks: Is Roddy White a top-five WR now?
11:22 Roger Rotter:  He's a top 10 wideout as I have him No. 7. He needs to show consistency in catching passes, but he has a solid chance to post better stats this season with the maturation of Matt Ryan.
11:23 Roger Rotter:  Also, teams have to cover Tony Gonzalez in the middle, so that could open more deep throws to White like Dwayne Bowe benefitted in the last two seasons in Kansas City.
11:24 FOX Fantasy:  Chris Blair asks: Will you name some of last year's flops that will have a better year than last?
11:25 Roger Rotter:  At quarterback, I look at Brady (obviously), Matt Hasselbeck and Carson Palmer.
11:27 Roger Rotter:  At running back, I'd look at LaDainian Tomlinson, Larry Johnson, Jamal Lewis and Darren McFadden.
11:27
11:30 Roger Rotter:  At wide receiver, I'd look at Randy Moss to rebound. Don't draft Braylon Edwards and Chad Ochocinco too early as they still are shaky picks.
11:31 Roger Rotter:  At tight end, Kellen Winslow can rebound, and New England and Chicago's D/ST have a solid chance to be top 10 defenses again.
11:32 [Comment From Don ]
Brady was not a "flop." He was injured!
11:32 Roger Rotter:  I consider him an injury flop!
11:33 FOX Fantasy:  Kelly Vierk from Denver asks: In a keeper league - do I keep Reggie Wayne or Dwayne Bowe?
11:34 Roger Rotter:  Definitely keep Wayne as he's proven to be durable and highly productive. He's been Peyton Manning's No. 1 wideout for several years since Marvin Harrison's decline.
11:36 FOX Fantasy:  Brandon from Colton asks: I'm trying to figure out in order by positions how to draft my team this year?
11:38 Roger Rotter:  For a standard league scoring (4 or 6 points for passing TD, 6 points for rushing/receiving TD, 1 point per 25 pass yards, 1 point per 10 rushing/receiving yards), take one of my top 13 running backs in the first round.
11:40 Roger Rotter:  Then draft another RB if one is available from my top 13. Otherwise, take a WR in the second. Then a QB in the third. Draft a WR in the fourth and a RB in the fifth.
11:42 Roger Rotter:  Take a WR in the sixth, then draft a TE and backup QB in the next several rounds. Be sure to draft at least 4-5 RBs and WRs and wait until the final rounds to select a D/ST and kicker.
11:43 Roger Rotter:  Ultimately, though, be flexible if a top player has slid, then look for value and take that player.
11:43 FOX Fantasy:  Let's take some baseball questions now.
11:44 FOX Fantasy:  Nathan asks: Should I drop Yunel Escobar for Alexi Ramirez?
11:46 Roger Rotter:

Yes, pick up Ramirez. After starting out in the low .200s, he's hitting .295 and has the third-most homers (5) among shortstops in the last 21 days.

11:49 Roger Rotter:  Also, I'd claim Troy Tulowitzki over Ramirez or Escobar. He's been on fire with a .415 average, 7 homers and five steals in the last 21 days. He's still available in two-fifths of FOX Sports leagues.
11:50 FOX Fantasy:  document.domain = "coveritlive.com";Marty from NJ asks: What do you think about a deal that sends Arod, DLee, and Bedard for Morneau, Lowell and Matt CApps. I'm in a H2H non-keeper league.
11:52 Roger Rotter:

For batting, I think the difference between Alex Rodriguez and Mike Lowell is greater than the difference between Derrek Lee and Justin Morneau, especially with Lee finding some of his power back.

11:53 Roger Rotter:  As far as Bedard and Capps, I'd rather have a solid starter like Bedard rather than a closer like Capps. If you truly need a closer over a starter, then just trade Bedard for Capps.
11:54 Roger Rotter:  So I wouldn't do the trade unless you are desperate for a closer and you can acquire Capps for Bedard.
11:54 FOX Fantasy:  Larry asks: Who would you rather have the rest of the year? Zack Greinke or Dan Haren?
11:55
Will Zack Greinke be fantasy's top pitcher at the end of the season?
Yes
 ( 75% )
No
 ( 25% )

11:58 Roger Rotter:

I'd keep Greinke for now. Both are great fantasy pitchers, but there's no reason to do the trade unless you believe Haren will post similar or better stats as Greinke and acquire more wins.

11:59 FOX Fantasy:  Collin asks: Is Carlos Delgado something to get back or trade for when he comes off the DL?
12:00 Roger Rotter:  No, he could easily become re-injured at his age. I'd avoid acquiring him in trades. However, you can put him in the DL slot and put him on the bench when he returns from the DL to see if he can gain his form of last season.
12:02 FOX Fantasy:  Gregorio asks: Roger ---good trade? Chone Figgins and Adam Jones for Bobby Abreu and Ian Kinsler?
12:05 Roger Rotter:  Yes, I'd acquire Abreu and Kinsler. Both Figgins and Jones are struggling, and Jones still needs to show he can post great stats over a full season. At least Kinsler has several years of experience (though he's been injury prone) and is still hitting great. Abreu is also a consistent player.
12:05 FOX Fantasy:  We'll take a couple more questions.
12:07 FOX Fantasy:  Sammy asks: What do you think of the Angels' young pitching? Anybody worth picking up and holding onto?
12:12 Roger Rotter:  I'd wait on them, such as Matt Palmer. Better pitchers to claim from the waiver wire include Max Scherzer and Kevin Correria.
12:12 FOX Fantasy:  PJ asks: Will Brady Quinn be a good sleeper pick in the late rounds?
12:13 Roger Rotter:  Better sleepers at quarterback are Trent Edwards and Kyle Orton.
12:15 Roger Rotter:

Terrell Owens will help Edwards' stats while Orton will produce in Denver's system that is expected to be pass-heavy.

12:17 Roger Rotter:  Running back sleepers include Knowshown Moreno, Chris Wells and Donald Brown, and wide receiver sleepers are Anthony Gonzalez, Lance Moore and Jeremy Maclin.
12:17 FOX Fantasy:  Thanks for all your questions! Visit us next Wednesday at 11 a.m. PT/2 p.m. ET.
