Instead of a pithy introduction this morning, I'll just link to the latest Roger Clemens story. This has pretty much become an episode of Jerry Springer, hasn't it?
Pitcher to start: Yesterday's suggestion of Phil Hughescrashed and burned. Tonight, we're going to try Tampa Bay's Andy Sonnanstine (owned in 2.6 percent of FOXSports.com leagues) against the Orioles. Sonnanstine's 5.28 ERA might not make you feel warm and fuzzy, but he's settled down over his last two starts.
On to the news:
Tough times for the Yankees. Alex Rodriguez's strained quad now has him on the disabled list, Jorge Posada is getting a second opinion on his shoulder, and it sounds like he's looking for someone who will say he doesn't need surgery. Finally, the aforementioned Phil Hughesmight get sent to the minors after his latest disaster. I'm officially depressed.
The Braves placed John Smoltz on the DL with inflammations in his biceps and rotator cuffs. He got a cortisone shot and will rest for at least a couple of weeks, so you're probably looking at a month or longer before he returns. Jo-Jo Reyes, who has a 1.17 ERA in five Triple-A starts so far this season, will start Saturday in Smoltz's place.
In an obvious attempt to copy A-Rod, Rockies SS Troy Tulowitzkistrained his quad last night, and the team's Web site says he's "likely" to be placed on the DL. In other Rockies news, starter Franklin Morales has been sent to Triple A, and the team has no idea who will start Saturday.
Cubs OF Alfonso Soriano will be back in the lineup Thursday, and he says he's ready to run.
John Lackey came through a three-inning rehab start with no issues last night, and the Angeles are targeting a late May return for their ace. But who needs Lackey when you have the great Joe Saunders?
Disabled Indians closer Joe Borowski has played catch for the last two days, and the team's site says he'll miss "at least another two weeks" with his triceps injury.
Finally! Rays ace Scott Kazmirwill start Sunday at Fenway Park. I saw Kazmir as a Cy Young candidate before he got hurt, so I can't wait to see how he's recovered. If he's back to normal, the Rays will be unstoppable!
Minor leaguers Jeff Clement and Wladimir Balentiencould be in Seattle soon, with Balentien playing right field, and Clement likely to move back and forth between catcher and DH. Do me a favor: Scroll down to the Mariners' entry in my AL Predictions artlcle from February, and tell me why you should ever read fantasy advice from anyone else.
Dodgers setup man/behemoth Jonathan Broxton had an MRI on his strained lat muscle, and was unavailable last night. The team's site calls Broxton day-to-day.
Plenty of guys were reactivated last night. Mike Cameronhad a terrific debut for the Brewers, Mike Lowelltook an oh-fer for the Red Sox, and Shane Victorinopinch-hit for the Phillies. If the Phillies don't start Victorino soon, will a reader in Philly please slash Charlie Manuel's tires? Thanks.
In case you were worried about the Diamondbacks not having enough young talent, check out Max Scherzer's line from last night. Scherzer could be a starter soon, so you might want to get on board early.
