John Juhasz Fantasy Chat(06/17/2009)
11:04 FOX Fantasy:

Hey everybody, John's gonna be here in a quick second.......feel free to get your questions in ASAP and we'll get going!

11:07 FOX Fantasy:  Our first question of the day comes from David in British Columbia.......Hey John, With Jason Bartlett off the DL, my inbox has been flooded with offers, all saying "he's hot now, but it won't last." Will it? If I do deal him, what is a decent return. Troy Tulowitzki is somehow available on the waiver wire, do you see him gaining steam?
11:09 FOX Fantasy:

JOHN JUHASZ - Dave, you have to wonder about owners who preface an e-mail (or any offer for that matter) like that. After all, why would they be so hot to trot to acquire Bartlett if his production is destined to head south? It'd be like someone telling you "Hey, I love your car, but even though I think the engine is going to fall out of it before I drive it home, name your price and I'll take it!" He's hitting for an insane average with the occasional homer, drives in baserunners and even steals bags every now and then. For that much production, I'd probably want a borderline All-Star in exchange at wherever you're weak. And Tulo is not an easy player to gauge...he's either really on or really off for any given week. I think my colleague Gerrit Ritt is about to pull his hair out since every time he benches Tulo in our big money league, he goes off ... and every time he starts him, the lights go out. If you decide to roll with him, you're really going to have to stick with him since he could have a big week at any time. But expect choppy production along the way.

11:11 FOX Fantasy:  Quesiton 2 is ALSO from Canada. How bout that?! This is from Jack in Toronto ... What kind of fantasy value will Brandon Marshall have next season? I own him in a keeper league.
11:12 John Juhasz:  It obviously depends on where Marshall ends up playing. But I have to wonder if the Cowboys are something of a darkhorse to acquire his services. After all, they just lost their primary WR1 and have to be in the market for a new one. Marshall could fill that void, right down to the instability and insanity if his WR1 predecessor in Dallas - T.O. Jerry Jones wants to win right now, so I'd expect him to put an offer on the table in short order. Just hang onto Marshall for now, though.

11:17 FOX Fantasy:

Question 3 is from Daniel ...... Is Dustin Pedroia gonna pick up his HR numbers?

11:17 John Juhasz:

Not necessarily. It's almost incomprehensible that he's got two homers to date this season, but that's the running total. However, he hasn't ever really been a huge HR guy. He hit 17 last year, but only eight the year before in 139 games played. It might get a little better after the All-Star break, but I wouldn't count on a massive output from him.

11:21 FOX Fantasy:  Question 4 is from my man Smith ..... Please tell me I'm not an idiot - I traded Marco Scutaro and Nelson Cruz for Pedroia!
11:21 John Juhasz:  You're not at all. I talked about Inge here last time. Yeah, he's got 15 homers so far, but if he hits another 15 over any two-month stretch this season, I'd eat a Tigers hat (as long as it's made out of Oreos). But looking at Inge's history, he's playing way over his head. He's a perfect sell high candidate while Cruz, on the other hand, is making a case to be a top-10 overall pick next season.
11:23 FOX Fantasy:

CORRECTION......Smith actaully traded Brandon Inge and Marco Scutaro for Nelson Cruz and Dustin Pedroia.....Sorry!

11:25
Who's the top WR in this year's draft?
Randy Moss
 ( 50% )
Terrell Owens
 ( 0% )
Brandon Marshall
 ( 50% )
Steve Smith
 ( 0% )
Greg Jennings
 ( 0% )
Other
 ( 0% )

11:25 John Juhasz:

It's good to know I'm not clinically insane - I thought that was what I read. Anyhow, I think you're on the right side of this one. Inge is going to flame out, and while I like Scutaro, I think Cruz and Pedroia will more than make up for that loss

11:27 FOX Fantasy:  This question comes from Nathan........My outfield is crowded: Upton (picked up yesterday), Lind, Damon, Cruz, Lee, Either and Manny. Which one of these shoudl I drop?
11:29 John Juhasz:  I'm assuming you mean BJ Upton, right? And instead of dropping, any chance you could trade one of them and get better at a position where you've been losing ground? Out of all those, I'd look to move Lind first. He's got 13 homers this year, which is already a career high for him in a season. Much like Inge, I think he's playing over his head. But you don't want to mention that to whichever one of your leaguemates might be interested in him
11:31 FOX Fantasy:  This comes from Steven in Scottsdale, talking some football again ....... Where do I look to draft Tom Brady this year? Is he a guaranteed first rounder again, or will he slip?
11:33

11:33 John Juhasz:

Last year, I said before all fantasy drafts that I wouldn't take Brady in the first round since a repeat season was too unlikely for him. I was proven right, but not because I predicted he'd suffer a devastating knee injury about five minutes into Week 1. There's a lot of uncertainty about Brady this year ...

11:34 John Juhasz:  Much like any guy who comes back from a huge injury like that, it's just too hard to predict how he'll play right now. It's going to take him a little time to get back up to game speed, and one preseason won't do it. I think Brady's best days may actually be behind him. I'm not sure I'd touch him before the fifth round
11:37 FOX Fantasy:  This one is from Jason, who asks ....... Which two guys would you pick as the best SS/3B combo: SS Yunel Escobar, SS Cristian Guzman, SS Alberto Callaspo, SS Clint Barmes - 3B Pedro Feliz, 3B Adrian Beltre and 3B Mark Teahan?
11:39 John Juhasz:  Probably Barmes for my SS. I have a hard time trusting anyone from the Braves lineup, a REALLY hard time trusting anyone from Washington, and Callapso seems to have slowed down some in June. As for my third baseman...
11:42 John Juhasz:  It's probably a tossup between Teahen and Feliz, but I'd probably give the slight edge to Perdo since Philadelphia's lineup is absolutely stacked, and there isn't an easy out anywhere in there, meaning no one gets pitched around and he'll almost always have guys on base he can drive in. Beltre can be too streaky for my liking
11:43 FOX Fantasy:  Good stuff. Here comes a question from Jackson in Dallas ....... Colorado pitchers Ubaldo Jiminez and Jorge De La Rosa - can they really be trusted throwing in Coors? Love the Ks either way.
11:44 John Juhasz:  Funny. This was almost an inconceivable conversation to be having a few years back. Like you said, both guys rack up the K's pretty well. Jimenez has been a little snakebitten at times as he only has a 5-6 record despite a solid 3.92 ERA ...
11:46
Expand
11:46 John Juhasz:  De La Rosa's numbers aren't quite as impressive as those of Jimenez, though. He started out the season decently, but has given up seven earned runs in three of his last six starts. Not sure what happened there, but something isn't right with him. I'd go with Jimenez first, and it's not even close
11:48 FOX Fantasy:

Makes sense we get this one from Boston and Terry ...... Let's talk Big Papi for a second. Is this current streak for real? Is he officially back?

11:50 John Juhasz:  It was a long time coming, wasn't it? I think his swing has returned. Four homers in the last 10 days. It's not as if he just had one great game and then disappeared again. He just looks more confident when he steps up to the plate, which can make all the difference in the world in baseball. I hope you guys bought him low while he was slumping. Get ready for the avalanche
11:52 FOX Fantasy:  Jerome is from West Palm Beach and asks ....... I decided to keep Matt Ryan in my league. What do you see him doing this season?
11:58 John Juhasz:

Ryan certainly crushed the consensus that rookie QBs can't contribute, didn't he? Before I get into specifics for this season, remember that for every Ryan and Joe Flacco, we have 10 examples of rookies who turned out to be huge fantasy busts, so don't go rushing out to claim Matt Stafford just yet. Now, as far as 2009 for Ryan ...

11:59 FOX Fantasy:

OK, time for one more question folks. Who wants it?!?

12:00 John Juhasz:

The Falcons really only had one weakness on their offense last season - the TE position. They really didn't use Justin Peelle too often, but now they've rectified that in a big way with Tony Gonzalez. Atlanta may very well have the most dangerous offense in the league next year. They have a highly potent RB1, great receivers, and now a great TE. Look for Ryan's yards and passing TDs to both increase

12:01 FOX Fantasy:  Manual in Miami wants to know about A-Rod .... With Mark Teixeira hitting so well, I never thought I'd see Alex Rodriguez forgotten about like this. Where does A-Rod stand in the fantasy-o-meter these days?
12:03 John Juhasz:  Only two homers and nine ribbies in June. Kind of strange. Just when you thought he was heating up. I think you actually pointed out the problem though, Manny ...if you want to call it that. Teixeira has been belting the ball like crazy and clearing the bases right before him in the lineup, so A-Rod hasn't had much of a chance to drive many runners in. Teixeira may be the worst enemy of A-Rod owners right now.
12:04 John Juhasz:

And what's worse is Teixeira was awesome in the second half of last year, so the trend may not change. Just chalk it up as an off-year for Alex.

12:05 John Juhasz:  Thanks for stopping in today, everyone! I had fun. Come back next week ... same time, same place for more Fox fantasy chat!
