FOX Sports Florida, Prep Zone doubleheader to feature two of Florida’s best
AUG 30, 2013 9:48a ET
On Sunday, Sept. 1st, at 4:00 p.m. Prep Zone heads to the University of Maryland for a doubleheader matching up two of Florida's best against a pair of Mid-Atlantic standouts. In the first game, perennial power Cocoa, which has advanced to six consecutive state semifinals, winning three state crowns, faces off against Washington D.C. Gonzaga. The run-heavy Tigers have a deep and speedy offensive backfield, led by senior running back Lorenzo Pratt and junior running back Jamel Dean. Freddie Booth-Lloyd, a 6-foot-1, 300-pound senior defensive tackle, leads a solid unit that could be Cocoa's best front in some time. The host Eagles, a Washington Catholic Athletic Conference semifinalist in 2012, feature a high-powered offense, triggered by a first-year starter at quarterback in junior Nick Johns. He has a bevy of skilled weapons, led by senior running backs Robbie Walker (Ohio) and Reggie Corbin. Defensively, Gonzaga will be led by 6-foot, 185-pound safety Miles Taylor (Georgia Tech).
In the 7:00 p.m. nightcap, Manatee will face off against Baltimore Gilman. The Hurricanes, Class 7A state semifinalist in 2012, return nine starters from an offense that averaged a staggering 49.4 points per game. Senior running back Trevon Waters (Minnesota, Missouri, USF) is a breakaway threat behind a talented offensive line keyed by 6-foot-5, 280-pound senior Jake Stickler (Georgia Tech). On the other side of the ball, Manatee features just three returning starters, but one is 6-foot-3, 285-pound senior tackle Demarcus Christmas ( Florida State). Gilman, the two-time defending Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference champion, got its season off to a fast start last week by handing rival Good Counsel its first in-state loss in three seasons. The Greyhounds may struggle to match up against the speedy Hurricanes and will need a dominating performance from 6-foot-3, 250-pound senior defensive tackle Chibuzo Ukandu.
