FSU 49, NC State 17: Takeaways and observations
OCT 26, 2013 7:21p ET
The Seminoles routed NC State 49-17 to improve to 7-0. They have outscored opponents 368-91 this season.
Florida State tied a school record on Saturday by scoring 40 points in seven straight games. That's something the Seminoles have not done since 1995. The 1995 team averaged a school-best 58.5 points per game. The 2013 team, so far, is second at 52.5 points. Better than the prolific 1993 and 1999 offenses that won national titles.
Here are five observations from Florida State's win Saturday:
1. Jameis Winston now has matched something that EJ Manuel did in 2012.
Winston has 23 touchdown passes in seven games, matching Manuel's 23 from 2012. And Winston has at least five games left.
When measured against Florida State history, Winston already has one of the 10 best passing seasons. Winston's 23 touchdowns are the ninth-best in school history. And Winston had 292 passing yards on Saturday.
2. It's not all Winston -- his receivers are playing exceptionally well, too.
Rashad Greene had a team-high eight receptions for 137 yards and a touchdown. Greene now has 21 career touchdown catches, tying him for the seventh most in Florida State history.
Kelvin Benjamin had four receptions for 89 yards and a touchdown. Kenny Shaw zig-zagged his way between defenders with three catches for 44 yards. He now has more than 100 receptions in his career. And Nick O'Leary caught his 10th career touchown pass, tying him for the most touchdown receptions among Florida State tight ends.
3. Devonta Freeman also (quietly) is building one of the best rushing seasons in the past few decades.
Freeman ran for 92 yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries Saturday.
He has often played in the shadow of James Wilder, but Freeman now has 561 rushing yards and six touchdowns. And Freeman also has 22 career rushing touchdowns, putting him in eighth place on FSU's list.
4. Florida State's defense is dominating and forcing turnovers.
The starters on defense played the first half and just part of the third quarter. So let's just look at what the Seminoles did in the first 30 minutes.
The Seminoles held NC State to 39 rushing yards on 21 carries (1.8 yards per carry. And 46 passing yards. Florida State also intercepted two passes and forced a fumble.
Even with NC State's inflated second-half stats against Florida State backups, the Wolfpack finished with 128 passing yards and 188 rushing yards.
5. Roberto Aguayo remains perfect going into the Miami game.
So he didn't have to make a field goal against NC State, instead kicking just seven extra points. But Aguayo hasn't missed in his seven-game Florida State career, making 10 field-goal attempts and 41 extra-point attempts.
At some point he's going to miss. But Florida State fans hope it's not next Saturday against Miami.
