The 21-year-old, who finished 12-6 with a 2.19 ERA in 28 starts, recorded the second-lowest ERA in the majors. During 10 second-half starts, Fernandez went 7-1 with a 1.32 ERA, tops in the big leagues.
Fernandez held opponents to a .182 batting average, which also led the majors. The last rookie to do so was the Cubs' Kerry Wood in 1998.
In 15 home starts, Fernandez did not lose, collecting a 9-0 record and 1.15 ERA, lowest in team history. He became the third rookie in MLB history to go undefeated at home in a season (Sean Gallagher, 2008; Johnny Allen, 1932).
Next Monday the BBWAA Jackie Robinson Rookies of the Year will be announced.
Miami’s ace looks to join Dontrelle Willis (2003), Hanley Ramirez (2006) and Chris Coghlan (2009) as the organization's recipients of the award.
