Cannavaro leads Cosmos at Old Trafford
Former FIFA World Player of the Year Fabio Cannavaro leads a start-studded team assembled by the New York Cosmos for Paul Scholes' testimonial match, to be played on Friday, August 5 at Old Trafford (live, FOX Soccer).
Cannavaro will be joined by former United stars Gary Neville and Nicky Butt, as well as Sol Campbell, Brad Friedel, Robbie Keane, Brian McBride, Michel Salgado and Patrick Vieira - all current or former Premier League players who will suit up for the Cosmos as they take on the Red Devils next month.
Those eight stars will be joined by eight New York Cosmos U-23 players, forming a team that will be the first US-based squad to play against United at Old Trafford. Additional players could still be named to what is currently a 16-man squad, according to the team.
The match will mark the final time the 36-year-old Scholes will play for United, punctuating a senior team career that started in 1994, ending last season having accumulated 10 Premier League winner's medals, three FA Cups, two League Cups and two UEFA Champions League titles.
Scholes finished his Red Devils' career with 466 league appearances, scoring 102 goals.
On May 31, 2011, Scholes announced his retirement, eventually accepting a coaching position with the club.
The match will be the first time the New York Cosmos have played in over 25 years, the five-time North American Soccer League champions dissolving in 1985 after a failed attempt to field a Major Indoor Soccer League team in the wake of the NASL's folding.
The Cosmos resumed operations in August 2010, with former Manchester United forward Eric Cantona serving as director of soccer. Brazil legend and former Cosmos player Pele serves as the team's honorary president, while Cobi Jones, the most capped player in US men's national team history, serves under Cantona.
Scholes's testimonial match will take place two days before Manchester United faces Manchester City in the 2011 Community Shield.
Full team: Nicky Butt, Chad Calderone*, Sol Campbell, Fabio Cannavaro, Ibrahim Diaby*, Stefan Dimitrov*, David Diosa*, Brad Friedel, Marvin Iraheta*, Robbie Keane, Brian McBride, Dane Murphy*, Gary Neville, Yanik Reyering*, Michel Salgado, Moriken Sangary*, Patrick Vieira
