Cahill to have second scan on jaw

Gary Cahill is set to have a second scan on the jaw injury he suffered during England's 1-0 win over Belgium at Wembley on Saturday night.

England's injury crisis ahead of Euro 2012 deepened last night after Cahill was forced off after less than 20 minutes while fellow central defender John Terry also suffered a hamstring strain.

Cahill's hopes were boosted this morning after Football Association director of football development Sir Trevor Brooking hinted an initial scan last night had cleared him of major damage.

The Chelsea defender is due, however, for another test before his Euro 2012 fate will be known, while Terry is also due to have a scan this morning.

"Gary was certainly our initial main concern last night," Brooking told BBC's Sportsweek programme this morning.

"He had a scan last night. At the moment the feedback is that we are hoping it is not cracked.

"It was his jaw following the collision and they were concerned that it was cracked and it might have put him out of it (Euro 2012).

"At the moment we're hoping it's not. I'm sure they'll have a second look but at present we're hoping that's okay.

"John Terry had a hamstring issue that will be scanned this morning. The medical staff are hopeful that it is not bad enough for him not to be able to stay in the squad."

Cahill suffered the injury after he collided heavily with goalkeeper Joe Hart after being pushed in the back by Belgium forward Dries Mertens.

The injury was the latest to beset England's preparations ahead of Euro 2012, with their opening game against France drawing closer on June 11.

Reserve goalkeeper John Ruddy (broken finger), Frank Lampard (thigh) and Gareth Barry (abdomen) have already been ruled out with Brooking admitting there were other niggles in the squad.

Last night's scorer Danny Welbeck has only just returned from an ankle problem while Scott Parker has been sidelined by an Achilles problem.

"We had one or two other injuries, obviously Danny Welbeck played having had an ankle knock," Brooking added.

"That seemed okay although I'm sure he'll have got some reaction from playing for the best part of an hour.

"Glen Johnson's got a toe injury. He played yesterday, it was a little bit sore towards the end but he should be fine as well and Scott Parker, of course, is still working towards that match fitness.

"There's a combination of different issues which will keep the medical team busy.

"At the moment we're still hoping that the 23 will stay intact."

Brooking refused to speculate on who might be drafted in should Cahill or Terry be ruled out, but said a call up for the likes of Rio Ferdinand would be difficult after three weeks off.

"That would be for the coaches to have a look at," he said.

"The main problem with that is the last Premier League fixtures were three weeks ago so whoever you are thinking about will have a match fitness issue."
