Ajax suspends Suarez for two matches
Ajax Amsterdam suspended striker Luis Suarez for two matches Monday after television images appeared to show him biting PSV Eindhoven midfielder Otman Bakkal in their 0-0 draw in the Dutch league.
Ajax said Suarez had been suspended for two Dutch Eredivisie games "because of what happened during Ajax-PSV on Saturday night." He was also fined an undisclosed sum that would be given to a "good cause," the club said in a statement on its website.
The suspension will come into force after Ajax plays Real Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday.
The referee did not see the incident in injury time of Saturday's match and Suarez was not punished, but he could still face sanctions from the league based on video images.
After the incident, Bakkal pulled down his shirt to show a red mark on his collarbone.
Top-selling Dutch daily De Telegraaf called Suarez the "Cannibal of Ajax" in its Monday edition and called for his club and the Netherlands Football Federation to take action.
Uruguay's Suarez was one of the stars of this year's World Cup, scoring three goals, but also faced harsh criticism for his handball on the line that helped eliminate Ghana in the quarterfinals.
