FOX Soccer MVP: San Diego
SAN DIEGO, CA
Adam Elder presents his insights from FOX Soccer's Mobile Viewing Party from San Diego:
As England and Italy battled for 120 minutes plus a penalty shootout on Sunday in Kiev, 30 lucky fans in San Diego watched the match in style aboard the Fox Soccer Mobile Viewing Party bus as it cruised the Pacific Coast Highway.
Given San Diego’s deep connection to soccer, fan loyalty among these two storied soccer nations was evenly split. The game was also represented locally by several members of the front office of the NPSL’s San Diego Flash.
Sunday’s surprise guest was US soccer legend and three-time World Cup veteran, Cobi Jones. Jones welcomed each rider onto the bus with a FOX Soccer scarf and enjoyed the rowdy atmosphere alongside the crowd.
Starting from O’Brien’s Pub, the bus drove alongside the ocean during the game and stopped at Carlsbad State Beach at halftime for a quick kick around on the sand. In the climax of the penalty shootout, all eyes were fixed on the bus’ seven television sets. Shouts and groans punctuated the tense mood until Italy emerged triumphant.
“England played like never before, but they lost like always!” Jones said tongue-in-cheek after England came away empty-handed from the penalty shootout.
After posing with the crowd for one final picture, Jones said of the afternoon, “It’s great being with the fans and to see different perspectives of the game, and how they see it as compared to how I do.”
Fans can send in their most creative tweet using the hashtag #FOXSoccerMVP to receive a spot on the luxury bus. Click here for the official rules.
For true soccer fans, aside from being at the game, watching it on a well-stocked party bus with other rabid supporters and a soccer legend has to be the next best thing.
