Shakira, Gerard Pique welcome baby boy
LOS ANGELES (AP)
Colombian singer Shakira and Barcelona star boyfriend Gerard Pique are new parents.
A spokeswoman for the 35-year-old Colombian singer says the pop star icon and her soccer beau welcomed son Milan Pique Mebarak on Tuesday at 9:36 p.m. in Barcelona, Spain.
A statement posted on the pop star's site in English, Spanish and Catalan says that ''just like his father, baby Milan became a member of FC Barcelona at birth.'' The statement also says Milan weighed approximately 6 pounds, 6 ounces, and that ''both mother and child are in excellent health.''
“I'd like to ask you all to accompany me in your prayers on this very important day of my life. Shak," Shakira tweeted to her fans in both English and Spanish Tuesday about going into labor.
Shakira, a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, will put her baby's birth towards a good cause.
"To celebrate the arrival of our first child, we hope that, in his name, other less privileged children in the world can have their basic needs covered through gifts and donations," the couple said in a release to fans when announcing the "Inspired Gifts" program.
Milan is the couple's first child.
