Gonzalez on roster; Donovan left off
CHICAGO (AP)
Los Angeles Galaxy defender Omar Gonzalez will return to the U.S. national team after a two-year absence, while Landon Donovan was left off the Americans' training camp roster.
Gonzalez was among 25 mostly U.S.-based players selected Sunday by coach Jurgen Klinsmann for a camp before a Jan. 29 exhibition against Canada at Houston. The Americans then will call in their regulars for the opening game of the final round of World Cup qualifying, Feb. 6 at Honduras.
The 6-foot-5 Gonzalez, regarded as a top defender of the future, made his national team debut in August 2010 and played against Chile the following January. He tore his left anterior cruciate ligament last January on his first day training with Nuremberg and returned to the field for the Galaxy on July 4.
Donovan was skipped over while he decides whether he wants to keep playing, and Houston midfielder Ricardo Clark also was omitted. Schalke midfielder Jermaine Jones, who has three games left in a Bundesliga suspension, was not included after the club replaced coach Huub Stevens with Jens Keller on Dec. 16.
Midfielders Break Shea and Chris Pontius and goalkeeper Nick Rimando were left off while they recover from injuries.
Eight players looking for their national team debuts are on the roster: goalkeeper Tally Hall; defenders Steven Beitashour, Tony Beltran, Matt Besler, Connor Lade, Alfredo Morales and Justin Morrow; and forward Will Bruin. The only Europe-based players are Morales and midfielders Mix Diskerud and Josh Gatt.
Forwards include Eddie Johnson, Edson Buddle, Juan Agudelo and Chris Wondolowski.
Camp opens Monday in Carson, Calif., and runs through Jan, 27.
The roster:
Goalkeepers: Tally Hall (Houston), Bill Hamid (D.C.), Sean Johnson (Chicago)
Defenders: Steven Beitashour (San Jose), Tony Beltran (Salt Lake), Matt Besler (Kansas City), A.J. DeLaGarza (Los Angeles), Omar Gonzalez (Los Angeles), Connor Lade (New York), Alfredo Morales (Hertha Berlin, Germany), Justin Morrow (San Jose), Jeff Parke (Philadelphia)
Midfielders: Kyle Beckerman (Salt Lake), Alejandro Bedoya (no club), Brad Davis (Houston), Mix Diskerud (Rosenborg, Norway), Brad Evans (Seattle), Benny Feilhaber (Kansas City), Josh Gatt (Molde, Norway), Graham Zusi (Kansas City)
Forwards: Juan Agudelo (Chivas USA), Will Bruin (Houston), Edson Buddle (Colorado), Eddie Johnson (Seattle), Chris Wondolowski (San Jose)
