La Liga 2818 43 Best and worst from La Liga 2012-13 season 31789098 Moments to remember Moments+to+remember La Liga

Another La Liga season in the books, another year of Barcelona and Real Madrid finishing in the first two positions. The 2012-13 campaign marks the fifth year in a row that the two Spanish powerhouses have finished at the top, the fourth time in as many years that Barcelona has won the league. While Lionel Messi and Ronaldo grabbed the headlines, Malaga made a name for themselves reaching the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals and Falcao cemented himself as one of the top strikers on the planet. In true “anything you can do, I can do better” fashion, Barcelona won the league by equaling Real Madrid’s record of 100 points set just last year. While some may have considered it a down year for Spain, there are still plenty of bright spots across the league. Without further ado, let’s pass out awards for the 2012-13 season:

La Liga 2818 43 Best and worst from La Liga 2012-13 season 31789095 Player of the year: Lionel Messi Player+of+the+year%3A+Lionel+Messi La Liga

Who did you expect? The Argentinian did it all once again, shattering records and leading Barcelona to their fourth La Liga title in five years. In 2012, he tallied 91 goals in all competitions, breaking Gerd Muller’s record of 85 goals in a calendar year. In January, he won the FIFA Ballon d’Or for a record fourth time, beating archrival Cristiano Ronaldo in the process. He finished the La Liga season with 46 goals, leading second place Ronaldo by 12 goals. Beginning November 11th, Messi scored in a league record 21 consecutive matches, becoming the first player in history to score in consecutive matches against every team in the league. Messi may seem like a copout pick given that he’s the most talented player in the league, but he has done more than enough to earn all the honors he will soon be receiving.

La Liga 2818 43 Best and worst from La Liga 2012-13 season 31789103 Manager of the year: Pepe Mel Manager+of+the+year%3A+Pepe+Mel La Liga

No manager has done more with less than Real Betis manager Pepe Mel. Behind the club’s two playmakers in Ruben Castro and Benat Etxebarria, Mel has guided Los Beticos to its first finish in the top half of the table since 2004-05. With only a +1 goal differential, the manager has pushed the right buttons to keep the team in European contention the entire season, falling just short in the final match of the season. Since their return to La Liga, Mel has laid the building blocks for the team to build on in years to come.

La Liga 2818 43 Best and worst from La Liga 2012-13 season 31789102 Signing of the year: Carlos Vela Signing+of+the+year%3A+Carlos+Vela La Liga

Yes he played for Real Sociedad last season on loan, but technically was signed full-time for just £4 million heading into the 2012-13 campaign. The former Arsenal striker has done nothing but impress, he leads his team in both goals and assists and has helped the club to a 4th place finish and a 2013-14 Champions League berth. The Mexican international has a bright future and will look to make his mark next season in his first European competition.

La Liga 2818 43 Best and worst from La Liga 2012-13 season 31789101 Breakout player of the year: Thibaut Courtois Breakout+player+of+the+year%3A+Thibaut+Courtois La Liga

Atletico Madrid’s keeper has cemented himself as one of the best in the game. The young Belgian, 21, and has been on back to back season-long loans from Chelsea. He completed an Atletico Madrid record 820 consecutive minutes without conceding a goal at home and has helped the team allow the least goals in La Liga.

His standout performance came at the end of the season in Atletico’s 2-1 victory over Real Madrid in the Copa del Rey final, which saw Courtois make multiple world-class saves. Though he is viewed as Petr Cech’s eventual successor at Chelsea, he has requested to remain at Atletico Madrid for another year, which is terrible news for every other team as they would love to see the league’s most consistent keeper play elsewhere.

La Liga 2818 43 Best and worst from La Liga 2012-13 season 31789097 Biggest dissapointment: Mallorca Biggest+dissapointment%3A+Mallorca La Liga

Coming off of an 8th place finish a year ago, Mallorca has plummeted to the bottom of La Liga and is headed down to the Segunda division for the first time in 16 years. They have amassed the worst goal differential in the league and have allowed more goals than any other team. While they have talented players in Tomer Hemed and Victor, the duo just did not have enough in them to help the team hold a spot in Spain’s top league.

La Liga 2818 43 Best and worst from La Liga 2012-13 season 31789099 Biggest surprise: Real Sociedad Biggest+surprise%3A+Real+Sociedad La Liga

After two years of sitting at the bottom half of the La Liga table and three years removed from promotion from Segunda division, Real Sociedad has positioned themselves as forces to be reckoned with after a top four finish and a Champions League berth. Former Arsenal striker Carlos Vela is the spearhead of the attack, he leads the team with 14 goals and 10 assists. Along with Vela, Antoine Griezmann and Xabi Prieto have helped the club score the third most goals in La Liga, trailing only Barcelona and Madrid. The team has a bright future with defenders Carlos Martinez and Inigo Martinez and midfielder Asier Illaramendi leading the charge, it appears that they have the talent to contend in La Liga for years to come.

La Liga 2818 43 Best and worst from La Liga 2012-13 season 31789100 Flop of the year: Luka Modric Flop+of+the+year%3A+Luka+Modric La Liga

The Croatian made an early impact with Los Blancos, but failed to secure a long-term spot in the lineup. After a £33 million signing from Tottenham, Modric was expected to be a key ingredient for the Real Madrid attack, but failed to provide much more than a breather for midfielders Xabi Alonso and Mesut Ozil. Modric hasn’t been a complete disaster, tallying the highest number of appearances in his career, but he has looked lost in many of his appearances and has not lived up to lofty expectations.
