The club said Monday that Puyol would be operated on in the city's Quiron Clinic ''to resolve trouble he has been having in the left knee.''
Puyol, a key member of Spain's World Cup-winning squad, was unable to start in Barcelona's 3-1 Champions League final victory Saturday against Manchester United, but was brought on as a substitute in the final moments by coach Pep Guardiola.
He will miss Spain's upcoming friendlies against the United States and Venezuela.
