Celta Vigo have named Luis Enrique as their new coach after parting company with Abel Resino on Saturday.

Celta and Resino mutually agreed to go their separate ways a week after the Galician club saved their Primera Division status on the final day of the season by beating Espanyol 1-0.

The man chosen to replace Resino is 43-year-old former Spain international Luis Enrique, who left his last post as Roma coach at the end of the 2011/12 campaign after the capital club finished seventh in Serie A and outside of the European places.

A statement on www.celtavigo.net read: "Luis Enrique is the new coach of Celta after an agreement was reached between the club and coach for the next two seasons."

Luis Enrique, who before joining Roma in 2011 spent a successful three-year period in charge of Barcelona B, will be presented in the coming days.

As a player, Luis Enrique started his career with local club Sporting Gijon before spending five years at Real Madrid. He then made the rarely traveled move to Madrid's arch rivals Barcelona, where he played for eight seasons. He also played 62 times for Spain.

Luis Enrique's predecessor, Resino, took charge of Celta in February as the replacement for Paco Herrera, who led the club to promotion from the Segunda Division the previous season but was sacked with his side four points adrift of safety in the top flight.

A Celta statement today read: "Abel Resino leaves Celta after both parties reached an agreement to go their separate ways, a decision jointly taken today which is considered best as much for the coach as for the club.

"Celta want to express their most sincere thanks to Abel Resino for the work he has done in the final stretch of the season, where the team achieved survival."

Celta announced that Resino's assistants Pepe Serer and Miguel Peiro have also left the club.
