Guadalajara reaches Copa Libertadores final
Guadalajara reached the final of Latin America's top club competition after a 2-0 away win over Universidad de Chile on Tuesday in the Copa Libertadores.
Xavier Baez opened the scoring from long range in the 23rd minute and Jonny Magallon's volley in the 55th doubled the lead. The first leg in Guadalajara was drawn 1-1.
Guadalajara, known as Chivas, will play either Internacional or Sao Paulo in the two-legged final starting next week. The Brazilian clubs play the second leg of their semifinal on Thursday in Sao Paulo, with Internacional leading 1-0.
Chivas becomes the second Mexican club to make the Libertadores final since teams from Mexico entered the competition in 1998. Cruz Azul lost the 2001 final to Argentina's Boca Juniors.
Chivas pressured Universidad in the opening stages and nearly took the lead when Omar Bravo back-heeled a pass to Adolfo Bautista, but the striker's shot was saved by goalkeeper Miguel Pinto's legs in the 13th minute.
Bravo beat the offside trap a minute later only to see Pinto dive to his left to save the low shot, but the goalkeeper undid his earlier good work by letting Baez's low shot dribble under his body for the opening goal.
Universidad responded well initially to the setback. Jose Contreras' shot was tipped onto the crossbar by Chivas goalkeeper Luis Michel in the 34th minute and Rafael Olarra thumped a header against the woodwork from a Walter Montillo corner in the 38th.
Michel then pushed away Montillo's left-foot drive in first-half stoppage time to keep Chivas in front.
Magallon scored the second goal from Marco Fabian's cross 10 minutes after half time. Magallon's header was saved at full stretch by Pinto but the ball rebounded back to the defender, who volleyed into the net from close range.
Chivas defender Miguel Ponce cleared Mauricio Victorino's header off the line in the 70th minute.
