Sao Paolo overpowers The Strongest

Brazilian giants Sao Paulo came from behind to defeat Bolivian side The Strongest 2-1 in Group Three of the Copa Libertadores.

The three-time reigning champions of Bolivia opened the scoring after defender Marcos Barrera deflected a corner kick into the net.

The Strongest had clear chances to extend the lead, but their forwards failed to convert their chances and the Copa Sudamericana champions' did not.

With three minutes to the break, Luis Fabiano's cross was parried by goalkeeper Daniel Vaca and Osvaldo converted the rebound to equalize.

With 10 minutes to go, Ganso assisted Luis Fabiano, who only had to prod the ball home from inside the six-yard box.

Ney Franco's squad climbed to second spot with three points after two games, alongside The Strongest. Both are behind Brazilian Atletico Mineiro, who yesterday destroyed Arsenal 5-2.

Paraguayans Libertad defeated Brazilian side Palmeiras 2-0 to top Group Two.

Ruben Israel's squad controlled most of the match and went to the break with a 1-0 advantage after forward Pablo Velazquez headed home a Jose Nunez long ball.

During the second half, Pedro Benitez sealed the game, also with a header.

Libertad sealed their second victory in two games to lead the group ahead of Palmeiras and Peruvian giants Sporting Cristal, who saw off Argentinians Tigre 2-0 for their first victory in the tournament.

Near the half-hour mark, playmaker Renzo Sheput broke the deadlock with an outstanding free-kick.

Visiting goalkeeper Damian Albil's error let in Carlos Lobaton doubled the distance for the second.

Before the final whistle, Albil saw red and defender Nicolas Martinez had to take the gloves.
