Bordeaux blows chance, draws with Lille
Bordeaux striker Cheick Diabate converted one penalty and then missed another as his side settled for a 1-1 draw at home to French champion Lille in the league on Tuesday.
Diabate opened the scoring for the hosts by converting a penalty in the eighth minute. Eden Hazard showed off his dribbling skills to level for Lille in the 57th but Diabate had the chance to seal all three points for Bordeaux in the 79th - only to crash his spot kick against the post.
For Lille, the match was a point earned but also a missed opportunity to go level on points with leader Lyon.
''A draw away from home is never a terrible result,'' Lille's England midfielder Joe Cole told Canal Plus television. ''But we felt we should have won the game.''
Reflecting on his first few weeks in France, the former Liverpool and Chelsea playmaker added: ''I'm enjoying my time. I'm happy, you know, involved in goals. I'm looking to help the team win some games.''
Bordeaux took an early lead when Diabate netted the spot kick after Lille midfielder Florent Balmont made contact with the Mali striker inside the area.
Lille nearly equalized in the 37th. David Rozehnal outjumped the Bordeaux defense to head a corner from Cole but goalkeeper Kevin Olimpa made a reflex save to palm the ball onto the post. Moussa Sow pounced on the rebound but was denied by Olimpa.
Cole released Hazard down the left wing for Lille's equalizer, with the Belgium midfielder cutting inside Carlos Henrique and Mathieu Chalme before burying the ball into the bottom corner.
Bordeaux was awarded its second penalty in the closing stages after Lille keeper Mickael Landreau struck Fahid Ben Khalfallah in the head with his knee, but Diabate could only find the woodwork with his shot.
On Wednesday, it's: Ajaccio vs. Montpellier, Caen vs. Lyon, Dijon vs. Brest, Lorient vs. Auxerre, Marseille vs. Evian, Nancy vs. Valenciennes, Paris Saint-Germain vs. Nice, Sochaux vs. Rennes, and Saint-Etienne vs. Toulouse.
