Lille moved up to third in Ligue 1 after riding their luck to draw 0-0 at Valenciennes.
The home side belied their lowly status with an enterprising display in which they hit the woodwork three times against the defending champions.
Lille, in contrast, created little and they will view this as a point gained.
The visitors did have the first chance after 11 minutes, Eden Hazard dribbling through the home defence but he could not produce a shot to beat Valenciennes goalkeeper Nicolas Penneteau.
Valenciennes, who remain in the relegation zone, came close four minutes later with Foued Kadir's determined run and shot kept out by a fine, diving save from Lille's Mickael Landreau.
Landreau was beaten on the half-hour mark but Renaud Cohade's rasping 20-yard volley came back off the bar.
Kadir then fired narrowly wide before the woodwork again denied the hosts, Vincent Aboubakar's shot also hitting the bar.
Lille had another let-off nine minutes into the second half when Gael Danic controlled a fine Mathieu Dossevi cross at the far post but then lashed his shot against the post.
Carlos Sanchez then tested Landreau from 30 yards after 61 minutes with a shot which was comfortable for the keeper.
Lille were struggling to gain any kind of attacking momentum with two weak, off-target efforts from Moussa Sow the best they could muster.
Not even Belgian star Hazard could inspire the visitors with his 75th-minute run into the box ending with a poor shot straight at Penneteau.
Lille coach Rudi Garcia threw on on-loan midfielder Joe Cole for the final 13 minutes but he too was unable to spark Lille into life.
