New England surrendered the first goal in a match for the 11th time this season when Bunbury beat a New England defender to a high bouncing ball, spun free on the left side and beat onrushing goalkeeper Matt Reis with a right-footed shot to the lower right corner for his fourth goal of the season.
New England wasted two prime scoring chances.
Congo-born Dimitry Imbongo, getting his first start at striker for the Revolution, collected a cross from Benny Feilhaber in the 36th minute, but sent a wide-open blast from atop the penalty box area way over the net. In the 49th minute, Imbongo headed Ryan Guy's cross over the crossbar from point-blank range.
Sporting KC goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen notched his 10th shutout of the season, having to make just three saves and facing just one corner kick, in the 76th minute. Nielsen preserved the shutout with a save on a left-footed shot off the left flank by New England's Chris Tierney at 86.
Attendance was 17,592.
