Henry suspended for one game
New York Red Bulls captain Thierry Henry has been suspended for one game and fined an undisclosed amount of money for violent conduct by the former Arsenal striker in an MLS game.
The league’s disciplinary committee said Friday that Henry had endangered the safety of Sporting Kansas City forward Kei Kamara in the 93rd minute.
Henry appeared to come up from behind Kamara during a stoppage in play and hit heads with the Sporting Kansas City forward, who scored his team’s second goal in a 2-0 win on Wednesday night.
Henry, who has 13 goals and a team-high nine assists this season, will serve the suspension Saturday when New York faces the New England Revolution.
Red Bulls coach Hans Backe learned of the suspension while taking a train to the team’s training session.
"I haven’t looked into that specific situation, I just saw it from the bench, so I can’t really comment," Backe said. "But it’s probably something with a kind of head butting, and we just have to accept that."
Ironically, Backe said he had planned to rest Henry on Saturday because he did not want him to play on New England’s artificial surface.
Fines collected will be donated to the charitable partners of MLS W.O.R.K.S. and the MLS Players Union.
