A solid performance from the Czech keeper, doing well to block shots clear when called into action in the 41st and 84th minute. The second block was eventually whipped back in for United's game-tying goal, but there was little Cech could have reasonably done to stop it. Rooney's placement of the two penalty kicks gave Cech no chance to prevent United's first two goals.

At first blush, it was nothing special from Bosingwa, though given the form Antonio Valencia carried into this match, Bosingwa may deserve some credit. Though Manchester United surely should have tried Valencia more often, Chelsea's makeshift left back kept Valencia from beating him wide, forced him onto his weaker left, and neutralized one of United's most dangerous players.

Let's set aside the goal - that was luck. Luiz was strong in the air throughout the day. As always, he looked more comfortable in his positioning on the left, and when Manchester United sat deep in the first half and invited Chelsea to come onto them, Luiz twice brought the ball into attack and forced United to adjust to an extra man. Add in a couple of good blocks, and Luiz was one of Chelsea's two best players.

Was it a decent debut for Cahill? Probably not, as he deserves criticism for an ill-advised, 11th minute take down of Danny Welbeck that should have been a penalty. Should Gary Cahill be forgiven because Howard Webb blew the call? Of course not. It was an poor challenge that would have given up a goal un most situations. He shouldn't be forgiven because somebody else missed it.

He was harshly judged to have fouled Danny Welbeck, a call that led to Manchester United's second goal. Given some other clumsy challenges (specifically, his 44th foul on Patrice Evra), his overall play may have influenced the second half call. But to look at Ivanovic's performance in terms of those isolated moments would overlook a number of good plays (particularly in the first half) to break up United attacks. Overall, it was a good day for the Serbian defender, even if the alleged foul on Welbeck will be what puts him in the highlights.

All of Ryan Giggs and Wayne Rooney's intricate work went for naught largely because of Meireles. Often the midfielder trailing the play, Meireles was strong coming back and cleaning up for a defense going its best to keep play in front of it. Three times in the first half, Meireles came back into the Chelsea area to clear the ball. Twice early, his pressure in midfield created turnovers.

A solid and much needed shift for Essien, returning from a long-term absence to a team short of midfield options. Though he clearly was not at his best, he got in United's way, getting stuck in and breaking up plays a number of times, particularly in the first half. When the defense was stretched, he was there to reinforce the line, dropping back into central defense. A solid outing.

What Ashley Young was to Manchester United, Malouda was to Chelsea. That's not a good thing. Yes, Malouda provided energy at times, but for the most part he was a non-factor. His day was exemplified in the first half when, in the 43rd minute, he stalled a counter attack before, moments later, turning the ball over.

With the exception of his first corner kick, provided great service from dead balls throughout the match, especially on Chelsea's third goal. His finish on Torres' 46th minute cross was unfairly overshadowed by the cross (and some patronizing praise of Torres), while he was robbed of a goal in stoppage time after a great kick from 28 yards out.

One moment of influence in an otherwise beguiling match. Made three poor decisions in the first 10 minutes, and it appeared United was content to let him have the ball knowing he would eventually do something dumb and give it back. Just past the half hour mark, Sturridge made them pay, beating Patrice Evra to force the Jonny Evans own goal. Still, it wasn't a stellar day for the young attacker, seemingly playing to his reputation of being a talent but still maturing player.

Great cross for Mata and a number of displays of skill, but he is utterly devoid of any cutting edge at this point. You could see why he's both still a part of the team and somebody whose goal scoring reputation is in tatters. The sequencing in the 77th minute - when he had two chances to get a shot off but didn't - is becoming classic Torres. Just shoot already.

Nobody would have stopped any of Chelsea's goals, and with his incredible late save on Juan Mata's free kick, de Gea saved a point for his team. De Gea has been highly scrutinized because his style is not what Premier League fans have come to expect from goalkeepers, but on Sunday de Gea may have drawn attention to other, here to overlooked virtues.

Another mixed day for Patrice Evra. His part in Chelsea's first goal can not be overlooked, letting Sutrridge beat him to the line, thus putting his teammates (De Gea, Evans) in a near impossible position. However, what will be overlooked in Evra drawing a number of fouls throughout the match, calls beyond the controversial first penalty kick. Still, when a defender's error is the key part in a goal, it's difficult to hand out a decent grade.

Nobody will remember the nice play Ferdinand made to come off his line and break up play in the moments before the Mata goal. That was the kind of day it was for Rio - solid, if overlooked. His one highlight was when a Mata ball grazed off David Luiz's head, onto his shoulder and into goal for a fortunate Chelsea tally.

Evans put in a strong first half before the own goal, where it was hard to find fault in his part. Good interception in the third minute, nice clean up at the mid-point of the half and similar work in the second half. It was another solid outing for Evans, a player who, while maligned for the last couple of seasons, has been very strong to start 2012.

A very strong performance from a young Brazilian who is finally putting his aggression to good use. Before being taken off (in what's becoming an obligatory substitution for Alex Ferguson), da Silva consistently broke up play along United's right, most notably going full stretch to get to a diagonal ball from Michael Essien in the 42nd minute.

Back into the starting lineup with Nani out, Young provided some energy if little else. His tackle on Branislav Invanovic in the 14th minute deserved a card, and without any other influence on the match, he was the obvious sacrifice when Ferguson sought to bring Hernandez on. For all the intricate build up between Rooney, Giggs and occasionally Welbeck, Young never took part.

It was another typical Michael Carrick performance. He was good position in defense and executed safe passes well, but there really wasn't much of an impact. He didn't create any scoring opportunities, nor did he do anything remarkable to break up Chelsea's build up. He was just … there.

His ball for Javier Hernandez on the final goal was amazing - well hit, curling around Ivanovic, away from Cech, giving the goalkeeper no chance to get it. It was just reward for a very good day in distribution for Giggs. Though Welbeck and Rooney were unable to have his passing pay off, Giggs' was constantly finding seems to get his attackers in position to challenge Chelsea's defense.

"In form" was the catch phase surrounding Valencia before the match, as in "Valencia is the in form (player, attacker, right wing, what have you) in the league." On Sunday, he was merely competent, at one point in the first half costing Manchester United a goal scoring chance for his utter lack of a left foot.

Two excellent penalty kicks brought Manchester United back into the match, though his influence had been felt before United's second half sure. His passing was very good on Sunday, even if his partner wasn't quiet on the same page. A cute chip over the defense for Michael Carrick in the 11th minute showed variety for somebody who has become an elite playmaker as well as goal scorer.

Welbeck never seemed on the same page as Rooney, costing United changes in the first half when they were the better side. In the 41st minute forced Cech into a block, nearly making a goal out of a busted play, but in the bigger picture, Welbeck was a non-factor. He was never able to use his speed to exploit Gary Cahill.

Two penalty calls that shouldn't have been. One penalty call in the first half (Cahill, 11') missed. Ashley Young tackles Branislav Ivanovic's ankles in the 14th minute and doesn't get carded. Patrice Evra and Daniel Sturridge are allowed to jaw at each other for the first 15 minutes without any admonition (does it sound like a good idea to let Evra do that with anybody right now?). Not a nice Webb should note on his CV.
