United appeared to be in command of the midfield game of chess that their clash with Spurs was at its core. In difficult conditions, they had steadied the game for the most part. In the 26th minute, Danny Welbeck had played a square ball to Tom Cleverly, who delivered the cross on which Robin van Persie headed home. But they allowed Spurs to seize control with their speedy runs late in the game and coughed up the equalizer. United paid a steep price for the slip-up, as City has closed the gap at the top from seven points to five.

Premier League 433 43 Premier League - Winners and losers 31543661 Newcastle Newcastle Premier League

Yohan Cabaye put the Magpies ahead on an elegant free kick but Adam Le Fondre came on as a substitute and scored twice for Reading. That gave Newcastle their 10th league loss in 13 games, a span over which they sank from 10th place to 16th. Their points tally at this stage of this season has never been so low -- not even in the year when they were relegated.

Premier League 433 43 Premier League - Winners and losers 31543659 Fernando Torres Fernando+Torres Premier League

The embattled Chelsea striker enabled the Arsenal goal with a bad turnover and took terrible touches on two huge chances that could have put the game away. Demba Ba, who came on for him in the 81st minute, was far more dangerous and incisive, suggesting once again that Torres should no longer be considered first-string.

Premier League 433 43 Premier League - Winners and losers 31547169 Arsene Wenger Arsene+Wenger Premier League

After a putrid first act, Arsenal shook the torpor afflicting them somewhat, constructing some chances in the second half and getting a goal of their own through a cool Theo Walcott finish. But as so often this year, Arsenal sleepwalked through the opening phase of the game and had a steep hill to climb by the time it woke up. A manager is accountable for this, raising further questions about whether Arsene Wenger’s tenure should be up.

Premier League 433 43 Premier League - Winners and losers 31543658 Martin Atkinson Martin+Atkinson Premier League

Before Arsenal knew it, they were behind by the two goals they would never overcome against Chelsea. In the sixth minute, Francis Coquelin was badly fouled by Ramires in the center of the park but referee Martin Atkinson made no call. On the ensuing play, Cesar Azpilicueta found Juan Mata at the end of his long ball, who found the net with his effort. In the 15th minute, Ramires got the ball alone in the box, juked to his right and apparently slipped right in front of Wojciech Szczesny. Atkinson carded the Polish goalkeeper and awarded a penalty. Two goals, two blown calls.

Premier League 433 43 Premier League - Winners and losers 31547168 Fulham's attack Fulham%27s+attack Premier League

Fulham is out of form and out of sorts. Last year’s talk of friction between the players and manager Martin Jol is resurfacing again, and the Cottagers had no sting in their attack at all. To even call what they did “attacking” is probably promoting it into something it wasn’t. They went ninety minutes without a single significant chance – or even a shot on goal.

Premier League 433 43 Premier League - Winners and losers 31543657 Tottenham Tottenham Premier League

As their fans pelted United’s players with snowballs when given the chance, the players threw everything they had at the Red Devils’ net. They were fairly dominant in the second half, when they sent in wave after wave of attacks. But it took until the 93rd and final minute, for Clint Dempsey to grab the equalizer when David De Gea parried a cross to Aaron Lennon, who gratefully played it back into the goalmouth for the Texan to sweep in.

Premier League 433 43 Premier League - Winners and losers 31544455 Chelsea Chelsea Premier League

Vibrant and dominant, Chelsea ran their game with Arsenal in the first half. The razzle-dazzle of their threesome of playmakers Oscar, Juan Mata and Eden Hazard, backed by Frank Lampard and Ramires, was far too much for Arsenal’s flimsy midfield to handle. They took a quick 2-0 lead and however languid the Blues suddenly turned in the second half, they built enough of a lead to hold on for a 2-1 win.

Premier League 433 43 Premier League - Winners and losers 31544454 Loic Remy Loic+Remy Premier League

Queens Park Rangers’ club-record $12.5 million purchase from Olympique Marseille paid dividends in less than 14 minutes when the French striker latched onto a through ball and smacked it in from the edge of box. If the rumored arrival of his countryman Yann M’Vila materializes – which would be a second consecutive transfer coup for QPR – this pair of dealings might just give the Londoners the requisite talent to avoid relegation.

Premier League 433 43 Premier League - Winners and losers 31544452 Daniel Sturridge Daniel+Sturridge Premier League

Who would have thought the dribble-and-trigger happy Daniel Sturridge, who had been marginalized at Chelsea, would be the missing ingredient in Liverpool’s tiki-taka-themed resurgence? His adroit step-over for Luis Suarez enabled Liverpool’s second goal in their 5-0 shellacking of Norwich City. Moving sharply and efficiently, Sturridge cleverly managed to get himself onto the end of a cross for a goal as well.

Premier League 433 43 Premier League - Winners and losers 31544451 Manchester City Manchester+City Premier League

Whereas their cross-town rivals United dropped points, City had the easiest time imaginable disposing of a fetid Fulham side at home. After a simple David Silva goal 90 seconds into the game, capitalizing on the rebound of an Edin Dzeko shot, this game was fairly well decided. Silva added a second in the 69th minute, when Fulham’s back line just let him run right through to Mark Schwarzer’s goal and deposit the ball into the net. To score more goals would have almost been indulgent, such was the weakness of City’s opponents.

Premier League 433 43 Premier League - Winners and losers 31544453 Winners and losers Winners+and+losers Premier League

In a weekend that pitted four of the Barclay’s Premier League’s biggest clubs against each other as Chelsea hosted Arsenal and Manchester United traveled to Tottenham Hotspur, a fifth, Manchester City, walked away with the biggest win. While they simply scooped up three more points against a hapless Fulham, United spilled two on a stoppage time equalizer by one Clint Dempsey. That cut the gap between first-placed United and defending champions City from seven to five.

Read on to find out who else had a successful weekend, and who came away with less than stellar results.
