The most memorable match in this rivalry's recent history saw Liverpool enter the game down two goals after the first leg of their Champions League tie. In the first leg of what would become one of the best Champions League knockout ties of all time, Chelsea took what seemed to be a decisive lead out of Anfield. One year earlier, Liverpool's fall trip to Stamford Bridge hammered in one of the first nails in Luiz Felipe Scolari's coffin. The Carlo Ancelotti era would start with much more promising results. On the hour mark, Nicolas Anelka put the home side in front, and when Frank Lampard chimed in with an insurance tally near full time, Chelsea had three convincing points in what would be a title-winning season.

With Didier Drogba out, Chelsea welcomed Liverpool to Stamford Bridge for the Reds' only trip of the Luiz Felipe Scolari era. The result started the Brazilian's exit from the Bridge. A 10th minute goal from Xabi Alonso opened the scoring, and with Chelsea unable to replace their best attacker, Liverpool was able to take their first league win from Stamford Bridge in four years.
