Premier League 433 2160 Worst signings of 2012 31498798 Dollars and sense Dollars+and+sense Premier League

When it comes to transfer signings, clubs always have their best intentions in mind. There's always the risk of getting very little in return from the huge investments made for players with huge expectations. Bottom line, that's the nature of the business and clubs never truly know what to expect.

We'll be the first to admit: everyone loves to see big money flops fall flat. Yet every year, there are those moves that make you scratch your head and wonder what the clubs were thinking about when dishing incredible sums of cash.

We were watching steadily this past year and present you the biggest transfer flops that clubs would rather forget from 2012.

Premier League 433 2160 Worst signings of 2012 31498786 Luka Modric, M, Real Madrid Luka+Modric%2C+M%2C+Real+Madrid Premier League

Old club: Tottenham.

Transfer fee: $50 million.

For such a huge sum of money, you better be starting most of your team’s games, and simply put, Modric has struggled to even come off the bench.

He’s started in just 13 of Madrid’s 32 games this season, two of which came in the afterthought (for Real) Copa del Rey. And when he’s on the pitch, he’s hardly made a difference, scoring once and adding just one assist in 22 total appearances.

Though it is traditionally difficult to break out in ones’ first season at the Bernabeau, surely more should be expected of a $50 million man who after Euro 2012 was one of the most coveted players in the summer.

Premier League 433 2160 Worst signings of 2012 31498794 Hulk, F, Zenit St. Petersburg Hulk%2C+F%2C+Zenit+St.+Petersburg Premier League

Old club: FC Porto.

Transfer fee: $50 million.

The whole world seemed to want the Brazilian in their squad but it was Zenit St Petersburg that won the race in September, splashing out $103 for him and Axel Witsel. But, it’s all turned sour in Russia and his relationship with coach Luciano Spalletti worsens by the day.

Hulk refused to shake Spalletti’s hand after being substituted during the 1-0 Champions League win at AC Milan and has threatened to leave the club. For the sake of everyone, it might be good if he did.

Premier League 433 2160 Worst signings of 2012 31498789 Marko Marin, M/F, Chelsea Marko+Marin%2C+M%2FF%2C+Chelsea Premier League

Old club: Werder Bremen.

Transfer fee: $9.5 million.

After Oscar and Eden Hazard also joined Chelsea in the summer, maybe it was a bit unfair to put big expectations on the young German winger’s shoulders. It’d be hard for anyone to compete for time in a crowded midfield that also boasts Ramires, Juan Mata and Victor Moses.

Still, we wonder what Chelsea’s plan was all along by acquiring Marin, who has played all of 20 Premier League minutes this season. That adds up to Marin having earned 475K per minute of game action. Ouch!

Premier League 433 2160 Worst signings of 2012 31498783 Fabio Borini, F, Liverpool Fabio+Borini%2C+F%2C+Liverpool Premier League

Old club: AS Roma.

Transfer fee: $17 million.

Liverpool fans must sure be tired of being high up on this list every year. After classic busts such as Andy Carroll and Stewart Downing, the Reds may have misfired again with a $17 million deal for Borini this summer.

Sidelined with a foot injury since mid-October, the young striker has just one goal in nine appearances in all competitions. And though he’ll have plenty time to prove himself once he returns, we’re not so sure he will live up to the billing. With Luis Suarez firmly entrenched as a starter in his preferred role, Borini faces an uphill climb.

Premier League 433 2160 Worst signings of 2012 31498782 Jack Rodwell, M, Manchester City Jack+Rodwell%2C+M%2C+Manchester+City Premier League

Old club: Everton.

Transfer fee: $24 million.

After showing much promise at Everton, Rodwell was “rewarded” with a move to Manchester City to presumably serve as Gareth Barry’s backup and understudy. But wait a minute, City paid $24 million for a Barry understudy? Yes, that really happened.

And with just two starts and six total appearances across all competitions, it’s fair to say Rodwell hasn’t done much to supplant the always scrutinized figure of Barry. Regular first team football would undoubtedly improve Rodwell’s play, but it will take time, which at City, is often the problem.

Premier League 433 2160 Worst signings of 2012 31498797 Matt Jarvis, M, West Ham Matt+Jarvis%2C+M%2C+West+Ham Premier League

Old club: Wolverhampton.

Transfer fee: $13.4 million.

One goal, zero assists. That’s the output Matt Jarvis has been contributing to West Ham’s season so far, all coming on 15 Premier League appearances (12 starts). As the Hammers’ marquee signing this offseason, we’re certain Sam Allardyce could've done much better with that sum of money.

Premier League 433 2160 Worst signings of 2012 31498779 Scott Sinclair, M, Manchester City Scott+Sinclair%2C+M%2C+Manchester+City Premier League

Old club: Swansea City.

Transfer fee: $8 million.

The midfielder joined the Premier League champion from Swansea for £6million after a protracted battle for his signature but was it really worth it? He’s only started two Premier League since he signed for City in August and was taken off on both occasions.

Sinclair's a talented player with qualities that Roberto Mancini should utilize during the second half push of the Premier League season. Whether or not the Italian will realize Sinclair's abilities in time though remains a complete mystery.

Premier League 433 2160 Worst signings of 2012 31498793 Maicon, D, Manchester City Maicon%2C+D%2C+Manchester+City Premier League

Old club: Inter Milan

Transfer fee: $5.6 million

Maicon is still a big name, but shouldn’t we all start to wonder why? After moving to the Etihad from Inter Milan on a last-minute transfer, the Brazilian defender has started just seven games in all competitions and only serves as Mancini’s second choice at right back currently because Micah Richards has been injured through the season.

Worse yet, Maicon’s been abysmal when coming on, especially by often being a liability at the back, which, you know, when you’re listed as a defender, just isn’t good.

Carl Recine Livepic - Action Images/Reuters http://static.foxsports.com/content/fsc/img/2012/12/28/122812-Soccer-Worst-signings-2012-transfers-G7-AA_20121228203251673_600_400.JPG http://static.foxsports.com/content/fsc/img/2012/12/28/122812-Soccer-Worst-signings-2012-transfers-G7-AA_20121228203251673_107_80.JPG
Premier League 433 2160 Worst signings of 2012 31498791 Jay Rodriguez, M, Southampton Jay+Rodriguez%2C+M%2C+Southampton Premier League

Old club: Burnley.

Transfer fee: $12.3 million.

We’d say that $12 million is a considerably large sum of money for a newly-promoted team to spend on a player who has often failed to make the first team. But that’s what Jay Rodriguez was apparently worth to Nigel Adkins. One goal and one assist in 15 appearances (eight starts) later, is hardly what Adkins had in mind.

Premier League 433 2160 Worst signings of 2012 31498796 Luuk de Jong, F, Borussia Moenchengladbach Luuk+de+Jong%2C+F%2C+Borussia+Moenchengladbach Premier League

Old club: FC Twente.

Transfer fee: $19.8 million.

To counter the loss of German prodigy Marco Reus, Moenchengladbach beat out several top clubs to de Jong’s signature this summer and made him the club’s most expensive signing ever. This is not to say that de Jong won’t have a great career, but the Dutchman, who scored 30 goals in 35 games last season for Twente, has underwhelmed at Gladbach.

De Jong went goalless in his first five starts and scored just four in 13 appearances. Missing six weeks with a knee injury hasn’t helped, but so far, de Jong clearly hasn’t been the Reus replacement Gladbach had hoped.
