FIFA has banned a leading Asian member of its executive committee from all soccer activities for eight years after he was found guilty of violating the governing body's code of ethics.

FIFA announced Tuesday that Vernon Manilal Fernando of Sri Lanka, who had been a close ally of disgraced former presidential candidate Mohamed bin Hammam, was prohibited ''from taking part in any kind of football-related activity at national and international level.''

The ban is effective retroactively from March 11, when he was suspended to prevent him from interfering with FIFA's investigation.

FIFA has not specified the charges against Fernando, who joined the executive committee under bin Hammam's patronage. Bin Hammam was banned for life by FIFA after a bribery scandal during his failed bid to oust President Sepp Blatter.
