It was a week to forget for top American players plying their trades overseas. From Tim Howard being fooled by an awful bounce in Everton’s draw against Wigan, to Clint Dempsey struggling through Fulham’s 3-0 thrashing against Manchester City, there were some pretty forgettable days for the very best US players.

Oguchi Onyewu also endured a rough weekend, earning a second yellow card and giving up a penalty in Sporting CP’s 1-0 loss to Gil Vicente in the Portuguese League Cup.

It wasn’t all bad news for Americans playing Abroad. We saw DaMarcus Beasley continue his outstanding form for Puebla. Alfredo Morales made his first Bundesliga start for Hertha Berlin, and Sacha Kljestan continues to enjoy one of the best seasons in Europe of any American.

The former Chivas USA playmaker stroked his fourth goal of the Belgian season in all competitions when he struck a long-range free kick goal in Anderlecht’s 4-2 win against KAA Gent on Sunday.

Kljestan has yet to play for the US national team since Jurgen Klinsmann became head coach, but he is putting himself in prime position to get a call for the team’s upcoming friendly against Italy later this month.

The speedy left winger continues to enjoy an outstanding season with Puebla, drawing a penalty kick that led to Puebla’s lone goal in a 1-1 draw against Club Tijuana. Beasley has continued to make an impact even amid the team’s financial struggles, and the team’s head coach change during the winter break.

The German-born son of a Peruvian-American serviceman, Morales made his first Bundesliga start playing 90 minutes in Hertha Berlin’s 1-0 loss to Hannover 96 on Saturday.

Morales, 21, is eligible to play for the US Under-23 national team and earned a call-up for the US senior team in the November friendlies, though he has yet to make an international appearance.

Having bounced around with five different clubs in Mexico before signing with Club Tijuana, Castillo has enjoyed an outstanding run for the Xolos, and on Saturday he played 90 minutes and set up Tijuana’s lone goal in a 1-1 draw with Puebla.

Castillo has settled into a starting left back role for Club Tijuana, and is enjoying a strong run of form that could lead to his first national team call-up since October.

The veteran right back put on a steady performance for Hannover in their 1-0 victory against Hertha Berlin. Cherundolo went the full 90 minutes for the second straight match since the winter break, and helped Hannover post a second straight shutout.

Cherundolo was in and out of the lineup for Hannover in the fall, but has started the second-half strongly this season.
