Clint Dempsey came out of nowhere to become one of the USA’s best-ever field players. A reliable scorer and a coveted international star, “Deuce” has come a long way since his days at Furman. Join us as we take a quick look back at his career:

Dempsey first broke out as a star with MLS’ New England Revolution where, under coach Steve Nicol, he earned MLS Rookie of the Year honors.

Dempsey would go on to score 25 goals in his tenure with the Revs, but it was clear his ambitions lay abroad. In 2006, Fulham offered what at the time was the largest amount ever for an MLS player, and Dempsey joined the Premier League.

It took some time for Dempsey to find his sea legs at Fulham but he earned his transfer back with a single goal, scoring the winner against Liverpool on May 5, 2007. That goal ensured Fulham’s survival in the top flight and instantly made him a Craven Cottage favorite.

Dempsey would end his second-season with Fulham as their top scorer after then manager Lawrie Sanchez converted him to an out-and-out striker. The following season he would again score a critical goal that led Fulham into seventh place – their highest finish ever -- and the Europa League.

Demspey would become the first American to ever appear in a major European final when he took the field against Atletico Madrid. Fulham would lose the game, but Dempsey was the star of the Europa Leagu campaign, scoring a sublime winner against Juventus that has been called the most famous in Fulham’s history.

Challenged by American coach Jurgen Klinsmann and desiring Champions League play, Dempsey departed Fulham under difficult circumstances on the final day of the 2012 summer transfer window for a reported $10m to cross-town rivals Tottenham Hotspur.

With Spurs, Dempsey again has a breaking in period to find his legs, but he has scored some important goals for the club already, including the game winner over Manchester United that broke a 23-year barren streak against the Red Devils for Tottenham.

Dempsey looks to be a key part of Spurs’ plans for years to come as the club fights for a Champions League berth this season. Alongside Gareth Bale, Dempsey has been remarkable, with a knack for pulling out dramatic late goals.

A key part of the national team, Dempsey is only the second American to score in more than one World Cup, joining his former Fulham teammate Brian McBride.

A fan favorite, Dempsey’s grit and straightforward play is beloved by much of the American faithful to the point that some fans have begun carrying giant cut-outs of his face at games.

Dempsey has won the Gold Cup with the USA twice and made a major impact in two straight World Cups. He is expected to lead the team out in Brazil in 2014 alongside Landon Donovan up top.
