On a night when four players made their US national team debut, and Geoff Cameron made his first national team start, Jurgen Klinsmann turned to new faces in search of promising prospects and came away with plenty to chew on.

The 1-0 victory wasn’t a thing of beauty, and there were plenty of things for the team to work on, but the US created plenty of chances and took it to an opponent that seemed content to bunker down. The finishing could have been better (something that’s becoming a recurring theme), but a young team, the US showed heart and determination.

So which players impressed and which players left something to be desired? Here is a closer look at how all the U.S. men’s national team players fared against Venezuela.

For a first national team start, Hamid looked very poised, and while he didn’t face many tests (he finished without a save), he handled the ball cleanly and avoided mistakes.

Rating: 6

Held up well defensively, breaking up a handful of Venezuela forays on the flank, but he lacked confidence and effectiveness getting forward. He’s a smart and tough player, but the lack of reps at the position showed.

Cameron couldn’t have asked for a better first national team start. He was poised on the ball, quick enough defensively to snuff out any chances for Venezuela, and he also showed off the passing that makes him an elite centerback prospect.

A smooth performance for Parkhurst’s first national team match in more than a year. He kept the ball moving when it came, and he stood up well to the challenges that came his way. It’s tough to see him breaking into the top tier of centerback options, but his game was something to build on.

While he wasn’t really beaten defensively, Pearce didn’t do much going forward and had a rather anonymous performance. He should keep getting looks, but Pearce missed a chance to really solidify his place near the top of the left back depth chart.

While most of the players on the team are in their off-seasons, Jones looked every bit like a player in mid-season form. He did have some lazy turnovers on bad passes, but that was overshadowed by his dominating presence in midfield, the pin-point passes he did complete, and the game-winning assist he delivered.

A tidy performance in the middle. Larentowicz didn’t overwhelm and didn’t contribute anything to the attack, but he cleaned up the misses in the middle and covered well for Jones’ marauding runs.

A good first outing under Klinsmann from Feilhaber, who delivered some beautiful passes and was one of the consistent sparks in the attack in the first half. He eventually faded, but still showed enough to merit a longer look.

An attacking midfielder by trade, Zusi was deployed on the flanks against Venezuela and just struggled to really get involved. He did provide some quality service on set pieces but looked far more comfortable during a brief stint in his more natural midfield posiiton.

It wasn’t a night to remember for Bunbury, who struggled up top as the lone forward in what played like a 4-5-1 on the night. He still found chances, but couldn’t finish any of them, including some really clear looks.

Combining some bright moments with some ineffective stretches, Shea had an up and down night. He nearly latched on to a great Feilhaber pass before also having a great header halted by a wonderful save.

Even before the game-winning goal, Clark had already put together a solid showing after coming on in the 62nd minute. He moved well, broke up plays, kept the ball moving and then stepped up with a clutch header.

A very active sub who found chances almost immediately after coming on, Wondolowski had a clear header goal saved and was a pest in the penalty area.

Lost in the buzz of Clark’s goal and Jones’ dominant display was a very promising effort from Loyd at left back. He showed off his speed as well as his confidence in possession. A natural right back, Loyd’s second national team cap was actually his second impressive showing as a left back.

The Sporting KC striker proved to be a handful in the penalty area as soon as he came in, and what won’t show up on the scoreboard was his run in the area on the game-winning goal that drew defenders away from Clark. A promising national team debut.

The hometown product drew a cheer from the Arizona fans in the crowd, but he came on too late to really have an impact on the match.
