Hope Solo undergoes wrist surgery
The US women’s national team’s star goalkeeper Hope Solo had wrist surgery on Thursday, according to her official Twitter account.
“Headed into surgery! Thanks for all the support everybody! Through everything...,” Solo tweeted.
Her team in the new US women’s soccer pro league, Seattle Reign FC, announced Feb. 22 that she would have surgery on her injured wrist, which had damaged ligaments. The team reported that her recovery time would be 6-8 weeks.
It was originally reported in late February that Solo, who helped the Americans win gold medals at the 2008 and 2012 Olympics, had a wrist injury and she would miss the national team’s trip to the Algarve Cup.
USA's current goalkeeper Jill Loyden broke a bone in her left hand during training Thursday and will miss three months. Loyden was injured while training with the team at the Algarve Cup and will leave Portugal on Friday to consult with a hand specialist to determine if she will need surgery.
She broke a different bone in the same hand during US women's training camp in January 2011.
The United States opened Algarve Cup group play with a 3-0 victory over Iceland on Wednesday. Solo’s teammate and current FIFA Player of the Year, Abby Wambach, scored her 154th goal, leaving her four shy of Mia Hamm’s all-time scoring record.
The US will play Friday against China, which drew 1-1 with Sweden on Wednesday in the other Group B game.
