CHICAGO (AP)

The U.S. Soccer Federation has decided to approve Women's Professional Soccer as a first-division league in 2012, even though it plans to operate with only five teams.

The federation usually requires a minimum eight teams for a first division. The USSF said Tuesday its approval hinges on certain undisclosed conditions.

The governing body adds that once its board receives confirmation from WPS that all five teams have agreed to those terms, U.S. Soccer will make a formal announcement.
