G.O.A.T. Doubt it? Tell that to his teammates, his coaches and the fans around the world that have watched him smash record after record. At press time, he’d racked up 88 goals in 2012. That tells only half the story.

Honorable mention: Sergio Aguero (Manchester City / Argentina), Didier Drogba (Shanghai Shenhua / Côte d'Ivoire) and Robert Lewandowski (Borussia Dortmund / Poland).

The man who would be the greatest player in the world… if not for Messi. By far the most driven and hardest-working superstar in the business, Ronaldo can change games with a single, superb free kick.

Honorable mention: Zlatan Ibrahimovic (Paris St. Germain / Sweden), Mario Gomez (Bayern Munich / Germany), Klaas-Jan Huntelaar (Schalke 04 / Netherlands).

Falcao has been on a tear for Madrid’s “other” club this season, racking up 19 goals across all play, and driving his team to an unlikely second place in La Liga. He’s been linked with a big-money move to England, but one thing is certain: the Colombian is red-hot right now.

Honorable mention: Mario Balotelli (Manchester City / Italy), Edinson Cavani (Napoli / Uruguay) and Robin van Persie (Manchester United / Netherlands)

The craftsman and the thinker. His range seems endless, his passes are precise. Alongside Xavi, he has turned Spain into a world powerhouse and made Barcelona the greatest club of our era.

Honorable mention: David Silva (Manchester City / Spain), Juan Mata (Chelsea / Spain) and Mesut Ozil (Real Madrid / Germany)

The craftsman, the ballerina, the visionary. Alongside Andres Iniesta, Xavi pulls the strings at Barcelona, setting up the incomparable Lionel Messi. The difference between Xavi and Iniesta? Slight: Xavi is a bit more goal-minded than his partner.

Honorable mention: Arjen Robben (Bayern Munich / Netherlands), Lucas Moura (Sao Paulo / Brazil) and Sami Khedira (Real Madrid / Germany).

The dynamo for both the German national team and Bayern Munich. The dynamic is simple: with Schweinsteiger in the team, they win. Without – well, let’s just say it’s a struggle.

Honorable mention: Yaya Toure (Manchester City / Côte d'Ivoire), Jakub Blaszczykowski (Borussia Dortmund / Poland) and Xabi Alonso (Real Madrid / Spain).

The old hand. Pirlo is a the master of the position, never better illustrated during his performances at the summer at the Euros, where he helped carried Italy to the finals. Age is just a number; quality is forever.

Honorable mention: Eden Hazard (Chelsea / Belgium), Franck Ribery (Bayern Munich / France) and Frank Lampard (Chelsea / England)

The distributor, creating plays out of the backfield. The defender signed a massive contract with Barcelona this summer, completing a move from Valencia that any young player would dream of. He has settled in well with Barca alongside superstar teammates, and was an integral part of Spain’s Euro 2012-winning squad. Alba will sit well in our 3-4-3 formation.

Honorable mention: Philipp Lahm (Bayern Munich / Germany), Ashley Cole (Chelsea / England) and Andrea Barzagli (Juventus / Italy).

The initiator. Hummels, who at 23 is still very much on the rise, has impressed with both club and country in 2012. In winning the Bundesliga with Dortmund, and putting in several good outings with Germany at the Euros, his stock is only going to continue to rise.

Honorable mention: Javier Mascherano (Barcelona / Argentina), Pepe (Real Madrid / Real Madrid) and Thiago Silva ( Paris St. Germain / Brazil).

The defensive rock. The Manchester City captain was a clutch in the Citizens’ run to surpass rivals United for the Premier League title in the spring, although the Belgian has struggled to live up to last season’s performances this time around. His leadership shouldn’t be underrated either – the centerback is the heart and soul of City.

Honorable mention: Gerard Pique (Barcelona / Spain), Sergio Ramos (Real Madrid / Spain) and Branislav Ivanovic (Chelsea / Serbia).

The brick wall. San Iker has had quite a year. He won trophies – the European Championship with Spain, La Liga in Spain and the Spanish Super Cup with Real Madrid – and personal achievements too. He broke records and hit career milestones – international unbeaten run, 143 caps, first player to 100 international wins, and much more. And at 31-years old, he still has quite a few years left in the tank.

Honorable mention: Gianluigi Buffon (Juventus / Italy), Manuel Neuer (Bayern Munich / Germany), Petr Cech (Chelsea / Czech Republic).
