In April 2011, Forbes magazine published their list of the world's 10 highest paid soccer players, a list Samuel Eto'o is poised to climb if he moves from Inter Milan to Russia's Anzhi Makhachkala.

But wages are only one part of a player's compensation. As we'll see from Forbes's list, off-the-field earning is what truly distinguishes the grotesquely compensated from their merely affluent brethren.

So before Eto'o makes his move and changes the international landscape, let's take a look at the way the world was before Anzhi stepped in and tipped the scales.

Here are world soccer's ten highest earners, starting with No. 10.

David Beckham earned $40 million last year due in large part to his deal with adidas, one which grants him huge royalties from kits, boots, and the like. At 36-years-old and in the last year of his contract in Los Angeles, Beckham still has the drawing power to remain on the game's top earners.

Ronaldo makes just over $2 million per season more than Messi in wages. The rest of the gap between his $38 million take home and Messi's $32 million is created by Nike, Armani, Coca-Cola and Castrol.

Few players can boast of as impressive a list of partners, yet Ronaldo sits No. 2 on this list. With Messi sitting No. 3, who could possibly be first?

Most of you already know ...

If anybody ever tries to tell you the invisible hand of the free market should be trusted, dare them to explain why Lionel Messi is number three on this list (or why he's the only Barcelona player on it). Granted, it's difficult to dwell on fairness when the wrong party's set to make $32 million per year, but Messi is truly unparalleled in the soccer world. Partners like adidas, Lay's, Konami, and AirEuropa seem to agree.

Kaka was the first new Galactico Florentino Perez brought in after resuming Real Madrid's presidency. He's also been Perez's worst acquisition. Troubled by injuries and a bad fit for the system that's been instilled in his absence, Kaka may now be the most overpaid player in the world. This year Kaka will make $25 million, though his deal with Electronic Arts is a big part of that compensation.

Ronaldinho inked a new deal when he moved from Milan to Flamengo in January, one which made the transition back to his homeland a little easier. If the two-time World Player of the Year ever had misgivings about an early return to Brazil, the $24 million he'll take home from wages and endorsements can buy ample distractions. Given Ronaldinho's recent recall into the national team, is seems futebol is helping distract Gaucho from his cash.

And here's where the sponsorships really matter. While Thierry Henry may not command the same wages he pulled from Arsenal and Barcelona, he more than makes up for it off-the-field. The $21 million Henry took home last year puts him sixth on Forbes's list, though the expiration of his deal with Gillette means his place is likely up-for-grabs come next year.

Remember the power play Wayne Rooney made last year? Saying he would leave Manchester United, only to pull off an about face when offered a new deal? That new deal has put 25-year-old in the top 10, though lucrative sponsorship deals Electronic Arts and Nike help.

While nobody would begrudge Zlatan Ibrahimovic's place among the world's best players, it's still amazing to think Barcelona paid $94 million for him and willingly let him leave a year later. And somehow, that factoid fits perfectly into Ibrahimovic's eccentric history, though there's little eccentric about taking him $17 million per year.

As amazing as Frank Lampard's career has been, it's also pretty amazing to think he's the world's eighth-best earner. Thanks to a 2008 deal which made him (at the time) the highest paid player in the Premier League, the 33-year-old is one of only two England-based players amongst the world's top 10.  The Chelsea midfielder takes home $11 million per season in wages, with another estimated $6 million coming through other compensation (read: endorsements).

Lest you think Samuel Eto'o is an impoverished footballer who has been blessed by an opportunity in Makhachkala, know the Cameroonian star is already one of the world's best compensated players. Thanks to lucrative sponsorships from Puma and Ford, Eto'o takes home an estimated $15 million per year, or about half of what he's expected to make in wages with Anzhi. His $28.8 million (per season) contract is roughly $11.5 million more than the world's next highest wage bill, Cristiano Ronaldo's.
