World 2018 2820 FOX Soccer Power Rankings - Jan. 17-23 32004672 Bayern Munich Bayern+Munich World

League standing: 14-2-0.

Last week's ranking: First.

After Bayern won the Club World Cup with relative ease for the fifth title of 2013 -- the club’s biggest trophy haul ever -- Manuel Neuer and Philipp Lahm were voted in the FIFPro World XI, becoming the first Germans and Bayern players to be included. Bayern also finalized the transfer of Robert Lewandowski for next summer, which should further intimidate the competition. Before they restart play in two weeks’ time, the main concern here is getting Bastian Schweinsteiger and Arjen Robben back to full health.

World 2018 2820 FOX Soccer Power Rankings - Jan. 17-23 32004673 Barcelona Barcelona World

League standing: 16-2-1.

Last week's ranking: Second.

Barcelona got the minimum requirement from last week’s showdown with Atletico Madrid, securing a point at the Vicente Calderon. But more importantly, they got Lionel Messi back at full health, which, as our Spain correspondent Dermot Corrigan pointed out on last week’s FOX Soccer Podcast, has dealt Gerardo Martino a wonderful problem to have. All of Barca’s attacking options, including Alexis, Pedro and Cesc Fabregas, are in excellent form. The attention for blaugrana fans, however, now turns to Neymar, who will be out four weeks after suffering a gruesome ankle injury during Barcelona's Copa del Rey match against Getafe on Thursday.

World 2018 2820 FOX Soccer Power Rankings - Jan. 17-23 32004675 Manchester City Manchester+City World

League standing: 15-2-4.

Last week's ranking: Fourth.

The Citizens have mastered a grueling schedule that saw them play 14 games since December 1st (an average of about one game every three days). City won 12 of those games -- including two big wins against Arsenal and Liverpool on Boxing Day -- the other two being draws at Southampton and Blackburn in the FA Cup. City are just a point off Arsenal’s Premier League pace and are poised for a big 2014. Even better news: Sergio Aguero returned in Wednesday’s 5-0 rout of Rovers in the FA Cup replay, scoring on his second touch off the bench.

World 2018 2820 FOX Soccer Power Rankings - Jan. 17-23 32004671 Atletico Madrid Atletico+Madrid World

League standing: 16-2-1.

Last week's ranking: Fifth.

Atletico may not have gotten the signature win they strived for against Barcelona, but nonetheless stayed on their heels in La Liga, again proving they belong in the title race for the long haul. Atletico also stayed alive in the Copa del Rey, besting Valencia in the second leg, 2-0. Still unbeaten since mid-October (their only loss of the season in all competitions), Diego Simeone’s group will look to keep up their form against a dangerous Sevilla side this weekend.

World 2018 2820 FOX Soccer Power Rankings - Jan. 17-23 32002100 Arsenal Arsenal World

League standing: 15-3-3.

Last week's ranking: Sixth.

Arsenal succeeded in defending their Premier League lead over the holidays and into the new year. To stay there, there’s talk of bolstering the squad after the season-ending injury to Theo Walcott. Wenger reportedly wants to bring in midfielder Julian Draxler from Schalke –-- and possibly convert him to forward -- this transfer window rather than in the summer. But in Serge Gnabry, Arsenal already have a German teen sensation filling in for Walcott on the wing. Gnabry was man of the match in the Gunners’ FA Cup win over Spurs and contributed an assist in the Villa win.

World 2018 2820 FOX Soccer Power Rankings - Jan. 17-23 32003075 Real Madrid Real+Madrid World

League standing: 15-2-2.

Last week's ranking: Third.

Los Blancos could be considered the biggest winners of 2014 so far. They’ve begun the year with three wins out of three, conceding no goals, and watched with glee how rivals Barcelona and Atletico played out a goalless draw last weekend. With that result, Real are now just three points off the pace and right back in the La Liga title race. The icing on the cake? Cristiano Ronaldo’s second career Ballon d’Or made for a perfect ending to a great week, and great start to the new year.

World 2018 2820 FOX Soccer Power Rankings - Jan. 17-23 32004888 Paris Saint-Germain Paris+Saint-Germain World

League standing: 14-5-1.

Last week's ranking: Seventh.

Other than one Ligue 1 game, a 1-0 win over Ajaccio -- PSG have mainly been dealing with the nuisance that is cup play since the Christmas break. With wins over Brest and Bordeaux, the Ligue 1 leaders are still in the running for both the Coupe de France and League Cup. Arguably the biggest win for PSG came on Monday, when Thiago Silva and Zlatan Ibrahimovic were voted in to the FIFPro World XI -- PSG’s first representatives since the introduction of the team in 2005.

World 2018 2820 FOX Soccer Power Rankings - Jan. 17-23 32004887 Juventus Juventus World

League standing: 17-1-1.

Last week's ranking: Eighth.

It seems almost insane that Juventus stayed out of our Top 10 for the better part of the season. No, the Champions League group stage exit doesn’t exactly help their cause, but to dwell on that disappointment would overlook how great Juve have been in Italy. Handing Roma their first loss of the season two weeks ago upped Juve’s lead on their closest rival to eight points, and extended their winning streak in Serie A to eleven games (matching Roma’s streak from last year for the second-longest in league history). In those eleven wins, Juve outscored their opponents 30 to 2. That’s a mind-blowing clip.

World 2018 2820 FOX Soccer Power Rankings - Jan. 17-23 32004676 Chelsea Chelsea World

League standings: 14-4-3.

Last week's ranking: Ninth.

Jose Mourinho made a big splash ahead of the weekend’s big match against Manchester United by bringing back lost son Nemanja Matic from Benfica. The 25-year-old was swapped for David Luiz back in 2010, and is returning to Stamford Bridge a well-seasoned, all-around midfielder. Of course, there’s no shortage of them on the roster, but one or two (Juan Mata anybody?) will likely leave. It won’t matter much to Mou, whose side has been looking sharp of late, especially with Eden Hazard leading the Chelsea attack.

World 2018 2820 FOX Soccer Power Rankings - Jan. 17-23 32004677 Borussia Dortmund Borussia+Dortmund World

League standings: 10-2-5.

Last week's ranking: Tenth.

After finishing 2013 with almost as many losses in the last two months (five) as in the first ten (eight), Jurgen Klopp will be begging for a kinder start to the new year. And a healthier one, at that. Dortmund’s injury list has been long and daunting, but with Mats Hummels and Ilkay Gundogan poised to return in the next few weeks, the hope is that the team will regain its form from last season. They’ll need to, as Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Monchengladbach are ready to continue their strong seasons and bump Dortmund -- currently in fourth place -- off the automatic Champions League qualifying spots.
