AEK Athens' Giorgos Katidis earned himself a life-time ban from the Greek national soccer team for celebrating a goal with a Nazi salute. He then pleaded ignorance of the meaning of the gesture on twitter, claiming he detests facism.

Sorry Katidis, but we're not buying it. Welcome to the soccer Hall of Shame. Read on to see the most foul acts and moments in the history of soccer.

The most infamous and controversial act still belongs to Eric Cantona in 1995. After having been sent off against Crystal Palace, the Manchester United legend jumped studs-up into the stands to attack a fan who he claimed racially insulted him. Cantona received an eight-month worldwide ban as well as 120 hours of community service for the assault.

Did he regret it? Hardly. Cantona went on to gain many fans across England despite the outburst, and in 2011 he admitted that the attack was "a great feeling."

Among the worst fouls and most hateful acts we've seen in soccer (or all sports really) is Roy Keane's revenge foul on Alf Inge Haaland in 2001. The feud between the two midfielders had begun more than three years earlier, when Haaland accused Keane of feigning an injury after Keane attempted to foul him. Keane indeed suffered a bad injury to his ACL on the play, and missed more than a year of action.

Then in 2001, with Haaland playing at Manchester City, Keane exacted revenge with a high, studs-up challenge on Haaland's right knee, ending the Norwegian's career. Keane then stood over Haaland and yelled "take that you ****, and don't ever stand over me sneering about fake injuries." Keane received a three-match ban, and then another five-match ban after revealing in his biography that he intended to hurt Haaland.

One of the worst fouls and biggest controversies ever occurerd in the 1982 World Cup semifinals. French subsitute Patrick Battiston was on a breakaway, when West Germany's Harald "Toni" Schumacher rushed out of his net and launched his body at that of the Frenchman, knocking him out cold. Battiston went into a coma, damaged his vertebrae, and lost three teeth on the collision, yet unbelievably, no foul was called.

Among the most unsportsmanlike World Cup moments ever is the Netherlands' Frank Rijkaard's spit attack on Germany's Rudi Voller in the 1990 semifinals. After receiving a booking for a foul on Voller, Rijkaard spat at the German on his way back to defend the set piece.

Following the free kick, Rijkard got into it with Voller again over what he deemed a dive in the penalty box, and inexplicably, both men were sent off. Rijkaard then proceeded to spit in the German’s lovely mane once more. The incident caused an uproar in Germany and added fuel to the fire of this important soccer rivalry.
 

In the 1994 World Cup, hosts USA were involved in one of the uglier fouls in World Cup history. In a Round of 16 tie with Brazil, Tab Ramos was elbowed by Brazilian left back Leonardo so hard that he suffered a skull fracture. Leonardo received a four-match ban for the hit, ending his tournament which his side eventually won. Ramos had to spend a few months in a hospital where he was visited by a crying and apologetic Leonardo.

Zidane's head-butt isn't the only controversial foul in World Cup history. Just a few rounds earlier in 2006, England's Wayne Rooney was infamously sent off for stomping on the man region of Portugal's Ricardo Carvalho. England was later eliminated on penalties, where Rooney could perhaps have been quite useful.

Head-butt? Hmmm, wasn’t there something…

Perhaps the most memorable outburst of all time happened on the world’s biggest stage and to one of the world’s best players. The infamous Zidane head-butt in the 2006 World Cup final. According to Zidane, a lewd insult towards his mother by Italian Marco Materazzi provoked Zizou’s reckless reaction, for which he was promptly sent off. “The Head-butt” not only marked Zidane’s final seconds of his career, but also led to Materazzi’s worldwide fame and yes, inspired its own statue.

Inter Milan’s Samuel Eto’o also blew a gasket once in a 2010 Serie A match versus Chievo Verona. After Verona’s Bostjan Cesar fouled him just seconds earlier, Eto’o ran over and head-butted his assailant, catching himself a three-game ban.

Brutal fouls are too often seen particularly in the Premier League. In 2008, Birmingham City's Martin Taylor committed one of the worst fouls in recent memory, literally snapping Arsenal midfielder Eduardo's leg in half.

“Enfant terrible” Zlatan Ibrahimovic is known to lose his cool every once in a while. Earlier this season, Zlatan ran into Saint Etienne goalkeeper Stephane Ruffier with an outstretched leg. The referee didn’t hesitate to send Ibra off, giving the Swede his 9th red card of his career.
