The U.S. men’s national team looks to continue its dream run through the 2010 World Cup by exacting some revenge against Ghana, the team that knocked the Americans out of the 2006 World Cup. But beating the “Black Stars” won’t be easy — not just because of Ghana’s stingy defense and strong midfield, but also because of the support that comes with being the lone remaining African team in the World Cup.

Ives Galarcep lists five things to watch in what should be a tightly-contested match of two teams playing with plenty of confidence.

Four years ago, Donovan delivered one of the most disappointing performances of his career in the United States’ World Cup loss to Ghana. On Saturday he has a chance to redeem that failure in a game that comes after his heroic game-winning goal against Algeria. Donovan is playing with confidence and he should cause problems for Ghana’s left flank. With revenge likely to be on his mind, it is tough to imagine Donovan not delivering a standout effort in the rematch.

Altidore has been one of the surprises of the tournament for the USA, with his physical play earning free kicks and drawing cards on opposing defenders. He will find the going a bit tougher against the physically imposing Mensah (pictured), who has been one of the more impressive defenders in the tournament. If Altidore can win this battle, the United States should be able to create chances against a normally stingy Ghanaian defense.

The U.S. defense played without Onyewu against Algeria and held up well. But with some extra time to rest his surgically-repaired knee, he should be back in the lineup on Saturday. If Onyewu does start, he could be matched up against the dangerous Asamoah Gyan. Onyewu can handle Gyan if he’s healthy, but if he’s not, the task could fall to Carlos Bocanegra, who happens to be Gyan’s teammate at Rennes.

Ghana normally trots out a 4-5-1 formation which gives the Africans an edge in central midfield. Will Bob Bradley adjust his traditional 4-4-2 formation to cope with this, the first 4-5-1 the Americans are facing this tournament, or will he stick to his usual formation? Don’t be surprised to see Clint Dempsey (pictured) pushed to forward, with Benny Feilhaber starting on the left wing in order to give the Americans a better chance of controlling possession. That move could allow the Americans to rotate between 4-5-1 and 4-4-2.

Bradley has been one of the U.S. team’s best players this tournament, and his unmatched work rate, tenacity and underrated creativity are key to the American attack. Ghana likes to clog the middle, with Anthony Annan serving as a tough defensive midfield presence, and Kevin Prince-Boateng and Kwadwo Asamoah rounding out the three-man central midfield. If Ghana succeeds in neutralizing Bradley, the United States could struggle to win the possession battle, but if Bradley can impose his will, he could help the Americans find chances like they did against stingy Slovenian and Algerian defenses.
