Stuart Pearce insists it is wrong to suggest Michael Owen's international career is over, claiming Fabio Capello's door is "still open".

Owen's slim hopes of making this summer's World Cup finals appear to be over after he was ruled out for the rest of the season through injury.

The Manchester United striker has found himself well down the pecking order in Fabio Capello's plans, with many sceptics suggesting his latest injury will end his international ambitions.

However, Pearce, who is a member of Capello's coaching staff, says the door remains open for the former Liverpool hit-man.

"It's wrong to say Michael's international career is over and that Fabio doesn't like him," Pearce told The Sun.

"He picks the squad on merit and the door is still open for Michael."
