Buehrle is the new Marlin
MIAMI.- The Miami Marlins continued their offseason spending spree Wednesday, agreeing to terms with pitcher Mark Buehrle while remaining in the hunt for the other top prizes in the 2012 free agent market, FOX Sports reported.
The Marlins, who officially unveiled star shortstop Jose Reyes earlier in the day, have agreed to a four-year, $58 million deal with the left-handed Buehrle. The team also signed All-Star closer Heath Bell to a three-year, $27 million deal for a whopping total of $191 million in salaries.
One day after submitting a 10-year, $200-plus million offer to star slugger Albert Pujols, the Marlins also remained in the mix for prized lefty C.J. Wilson.
FOX Sports reported the Marlins have made a six-year offer to Wilson, though the Los Angeles Angels are viewed as the favorite to land the southern California native.
The Marlins also talked with the agent for first baseman Prince Fielder, while the Cardinals met with Pujols' agent, Dan Lozano, on an increased offer.
According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the Cardinals are willing to go to 10 years, $220 million to keep Pujols, who is set to turn 32 next month. The Marlins have said they will not grant Pujols a no-trade clause, while the Cardinals are believed to be willing to insert the key provision.
Buehrle brings a 3.83 career ERA and a .575 winning percentage to the Marlins rotation. The 32-year-old previously spent all 12 years in the majors with the Chicago White Sox, earning four All-Star appearances and three Gold Gloves.
Buehrle, who was 13-9 with a 3.59 ERA in 2011, will be reunited with former White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen.
