Monday Scramble: Daly video still hot topic
by Golfweek.com
"Have you seen the John Daly video?"
Golfweek.com
No? Go ahead and watch it.
To say it's John Daly unplugged is an understatement. It's John Daly undressed (well, half-dressed). John Daly unaffected. John Daly unbelievable.
(Others might say John Daly unbecoming. John Daly unnecessary. John Daly, please stay in your underwear.)
We here at the Scramble loved the uniform: Arkansas football cap, jeans, mirrored shades, golf glove, cigarette, mullet.
No shirt, no shoes, no worries.
While Daly was hanging out across the pond last weekend missing the cut at the Spanish Open, golf fans in America were trying their best to figure out how a guy as gutsy as Daly (who is also nicknamed "The Lion") walks around without any traces of chest hair.
Meanwhile, the New York Daily News was busy reporting that Roger Clemens had a relationship with one of Daly's ex-wives, and Daly's ex-swing coach Butch Harmon was busy refuting comments by Long John that Harmon had "apologized" for criticizing him during Bay Hill week.
So, how was your week?
You might also find it appropriate that Daly's playing the Italian Open this week in Milan, Italy, the fashion capital of the world.
Hey J.D., can you say "Gucci?"
A frame-by-frame breakdown:
:08 -- Television reporter (who never actually introduces himself), introduces Daly as "the man, the myth, the legend," then puts his arm around J.D., touching the shirtless, two-time major winner for the first time.
:12 -- Reporter touches Daly again, on the right elbow.
:13 -- Says Daly, "It's beautiful (out here), just letting the rib heal with some nice sun, some good friends and nice to be back here and see my course."
Welcome to John Daly's Murder Rock and Country Club in Branson, Mo.
"There's a legend heard around the hollows of Branson Creek about Murder Rock," reads the club's Web site, "a place where Civil War bushwhacker Alfred Bolin and his gang were known to ambush travelers."
:33 -- Reporter butters up Daly, referring to course as "a beautiful... unbelievably gorgeous course."
:52 -- Reporter explains that he will be playing Daly in a 1-hole match: "And I'm gonna take as many takes as it takes me to look good!"
Take that!
:58 -- Reporter puts his arm around Daly, touching him for the third time.
1:05 -- Daly, with cigarette hanging out of his mouth, hammers drive toward the left side of the fairway.
1:18 -- Daly to reporter: "Where'd you get those (Puma) shoes, New York City?"
1:29 -- Says reporter (voiceover): "The drive of my life got me to within 30 yards of Daly's 3-wood."
Right.
1:35 -- Reporter talks trash: "Are you getting nervous at all?"
Daly: "Do I look nervous?"
1:42 -- Daly hits approach. "Oh this could be nice... uh oh, uh oh. Uh oh!"
2:06 -- Reporter and Daly chat some more.
Reporter: "What is it like being you, being a rock star of golf?"
Daly: "I don't know if I'm a rock star of golf, but I like to have fun. The injuries that I've had over the last year and a half have really hurt my game, but I just feel healthy now... I mean I may not look healthy.
"But don't underestimate the fat man."
2:17 -- Daly's phone beeps after receiving a text message.
2:25 -- Daly: "I like to have fun and sometimes the Tour gets mad at me, but when you have fun, rumors start spreading that really aren't true facts and stuff, but what can you do?"
2:39 -- Reporter: "(If you could do it all over again)...would you be a rock star or a golf star?"
Daly: "Golf. I like to work during the day. I don't know, it'd be fun for a while to be a rock star, but I love golf too much."
What they are saying
Now, a collection of comments (the majority of which were positive) on the Daly interview, as posted on YouTube.com:
Daly vs. Harmon, Round 2
Daly: (at Spanish Open) "I called (Harmon) the other day and he said he realized he didn't get his facts right and he felt bad about it. He has apologized to me. After what Butch said ... my marketability went right down. I told him, 'You cost me quite a bit of money through the stuff that you said, I wish you would have called me when you could have got the facts straight.'"(referring to Butch Harmon's statements during Bay Hill week that included the line, "And the most important thing in his life is getting drunk")
Harmon's reaction (as told to ESPN.com): "John called me last Thursday. His opening line to me was 'I've lost all my contracts because of what you said. Can you please go on the Golf Channel and make a retraction?'
"I told him that he had no one to blame but himself, that 'until you start realizing that you're the cause of all this and get some help, you're going to continue to have problems.' I told him I would be glad to help. But I wasn't going to retract anything that I said."
"...I like John Daly and wish him well. I hope he gets his act together. ... I saw this ridiculous video the other day of him playing without his shirt and shoes. He does one bizarre thing after another. I feel sorry for him. He's a tremendous talent. But he's wasted all of his talent and continues to do so."
Quotes of the Week
"I'm a little bit numb right now, but that walk up 18 was the best feeling in my entire life, and I'll never forget that feeling. I had chills going up and down my spine. I want to recreate that as many times as possible now, so I'm going to really work hard."
-- Anthony Kim, after his maiden PGA Tour victory at the Wachovia Championship
"There's not much to talk about, really."
-- Trevor Immelman, after missing the cut at the Wachovia Championship, his second consecutive missed weekend since winning the Masters.
"I ain't going to be no leader now. I don't mind leading, but if they need me to lead it, I'll take the jump. This dog can hunt; he ain't afraid."
-- Boo Weekley, on whether or not he would enjoy taking a leadership role on this year's American Ryder Cup team
