U.S. can really use a victory right about now

Is it a stretch to say that the 2008 U.S. Ryder Cup team could provide a boost to sagging U.S. spirits? Not really. The need is there. Our economy is teetering on the cut line of a recession; we're plus-fours deep in debt; we're still scrambling in Iraq and Afghanistan; and even with the Tiger Woods of swimming, Michael Phelps, we couldn't match China's gold-medal performance in Beijing. (And that whiz-bang opening ceremony and Jetsons-style architecture couldn't help but add to the uneasy feeling that the 21st century won't be ours to dominate.) We're not exactly striping it.
Plus, Euros have been kicking our butts, currency-wise and on the course, too.
Bottom line, we could use a little self-belief, and 12 golfers and one crotchety captain could help the cause. Let us count the ways:

Worth a thousand words:
Likewise, Paul Azinger. Recent U.S. Ryder Cup captain's picks haven't exactly gone gangbusters. Naturally, Zinger wanted double the number of selections. We're overdue to have a captain be a hero rather than hapless. Plus, who doesn't want to cram a U.S. victory in Nick Faldo's smug mug? Guys like him are the reason we declared independence in the first place!
In sum, we need something other than Europe 18 1/2, U.S. 9 1/2. In golf we're trusting.

Well the wonderful thing about the pennant race is it's a little longer lasting then the Ryder Cup. As far as the Patriots are concerned, our main concern now is, how well can Matt actually play. Can an unproven QB play with an team as well coached and disiplined as the Pats are. I don't think we have too much to worry about. But time will tell. Now the Ryder Cup can still be fit into everything else going on. Let's Go Red Sox!!

Doesn't anyone know we're in a pennant race? I can't switch grears that fast anymore.I love golf but with Brady going down and the Red Sox trying for their 3rd title in 5 years golf is on the backburner even if it is the Ryder Cup.<br />Go Red Sox!!!!!

Man, what's with the ripping of Faldo? I've never thought of the guy as a jerk, even during his steely days at no. 1. He certainly wasn't the friendliest guy, especially to fellow pros, that was more single mindedness and introverted. Seems to be a likable guy as a golf commentator. I'm pretty sure the US declared independence for other reason than English facial expressions.
