Startled to see the first sign of weakness in Woods

FOR a fleeting moment Lucas Glover was the most unpopular golfer on the planet on Monday as he halted Phil Mickelson's incredible late rally in the US Open .

Mickelson shared the lead with Glover in the run-in and the fairytale finish for the golfer who was making a rare appearance would have been warmly received, but Glover had aspirations of his own and finished in style at Bethpage Black to claim his first major title.

With four holes remaining it looked as if nobody wanted to win with shots being dropped by the leaders atevery hole.

Glover held his nerve, however, and he played some solid Golf throughout the four days to deservedly win.

It will be interesting to see what the win does for hiscareer.

One man who will be wondering what might have been is Tiger Woods.

The world number one could have been a champion who just made the cut and then went on to win the tournament, but his putting let him down. It is the first timeI can recall Woods missing crucial putts.

We have become so accustomed to seeing him hole the 10 footers when it matters that it came as a massive shock when he missed.

It was very unlike him.

It has felt like New York this week in Germany for the BMW Championship due to the weather.

Like Bethpage Black, it has rained non-stop here. The course, the driving range and putting practice area was closed to the players on Tuesday and it means only those who played in the pro-amyesterday will have had the opportunity to test out the conditions.

I walked the course yesterday afternoon and it isclear the ball is going to plug wherever it lands.

The course here in Munich is one of those where there are a lot of holes you would happily take a par and walk off.

It is easy to make nines or 10s here which can destroy your hopes of winning, but I hope the soft nature of the course is going to help this week.

It will play really long, the ball will not bounce, and it will be four days of target Golf for us all. It should suit the longer hitter and I'm looking forward to the challenge. It feels like a rainy day back home in November so I know what to expect.

This is the start of three massive tournaments for me. I still have hopes of qualifying for the Open, but I need to play well at three testing coursesto get there. After this week the European Tour moves on to France and Paris National, which is an unbelievable course. It is my pick to host the Ryder Cup in 2018.

From there it is on to Loch Lomond for the Scottish Open where a couple of spots will be available for Turnberry.

Last year I missed out by a shot at Loch Lomond as fifth place would have been enough to qualify and I finished sixth. You never know what canhappen and I will certainly be giving it my best.
