Golf: Final round agony for Reid in Irish open

Another maiden Ladies European Tour victory chance slipped by for Mel Reid with an erratic final round in the Irish Open yesterday.

The first two days of the tournament brought much promise for the 21-year-old, who was returning to the Tour for the first time since her third place in the German Open at the end of May.

Reid began the final day at the Portmarnock Links on six under par, only one shot behind overnight leader Diana Luna of Italy and tied with Sweden's Sophie Gustafson.

Play was delayed twice because of sea fog but when the players were able to get out on the course, it was Luna who went clear of the chasing pack.

She surged three shots ahead going to the back nine and Reid faltered in her response.

A dropped shot on the par-five sixth was rescued by a birdie on the ninth but Reid began the back nine with the blow of a double-bogey six at the 10th.

That was effectively the end of her chances. She pulled back shots at the 11th, 13th and 15th but dropped further shots at 16 and 17 to finish one over par for the round and five under for the tournament.

Luna confirmed her place at the top of the leaderboard with a final round of 68 to finish 11 under, four shots clear of Gustafson, Gwyaldys Nocera of France and Florentyna Parker - a best Tour result for the 20-year-old English player.

However, Reid's sixth place in Ireland was enough to lift her to second place in this season's LET money list and keeps her firmly in contention for a place in Europe's Solheim Cup squad to take on the USA at Sugar Grove, Illinois, from August 21-23.

Parker finished with a round of 70, a double bogey on the 15th denying the Germany-born Briton a chance to put pressure on Luna in the closing holes.
